Giants in the Earth discussion: Jack Sparrow and Pirates of the Carribean

Easiest solution is to make him (her?) the anti-Sparrow. Aristocratic, prim, methodical, disciplined, and cultured. The name of his ship is a classical allusion. Rather than rum, he probably buys his crew a barrel of a different fine brandy each voyage, to educate them on the nuances of quality spirits. He has studied under seven different renowned fencing masters, and fights like an elegant, poised mincing machine. He invites his respected enemies over for port and cigars, and is impeccably polite to the ladies. You get the idea...

That's actually quite close. He's based mainly on captain Nemo, with a bit of Sinbad and Francis Drake. Definitely a port and cigars man. He's good with children, 'cause he's not entirely sure which are his own. Plenty of connections in high places, plenty of enemies too.

His background's not the problem. His mannerisms are what I've got problems working on. He's cocky and defiant, and that's when he starts sounding like Jack and my writing goes off course.

For AD&D I'd say he was a very, very high level thief/acrobat. CN or TN.
He's a rogue more than anything, though you can pick your class to model that; he's a decent swordfighter, but more than anything this man can BLUFF.

Skill Focus: Bluff, Deceitful, Persuasive, etc.

Norrington is a high level fighter. (9th, easily, given his command position. LN, but then he changes alignment to CN and loses the appropriate level (and everything associated with it).)
I'd agree with the statting, but not with the alignment change. It's not like lawful folks never find themselves outside the law they serve; Norrington even wants to get back into the law's graces. "Promise of redemption" and all that. The only alignment change I can see for Norrington is a move from LN to LE.

Will Turner is another high-level fighter (7th or thereabouts) with an 18 in DEX). NG

Elizabeth Swann is a low-level fighter (2nd-4th level maybe) on her way to (maybe?) being a thief. LG as a commoner but has become NG or CG by the second movie.
Yeah, but she's a good enough fighter to best the crew of the Flying Dutchman; and with Two-weapon fighting too, it seems. NG or TN make the most sense for me.

Cutler Becket:
LE ... Expert! He's a ruthless merchant, and he shows the ability of an NPC class to confound the PCs! Yay!

Mercer:
LE, and I really want this guy to have Assassin levels. I mean, how cool was:
"Evenin' guv'nor. Shame that. He was carryin this ... it's a letter to the King: it's from you."

He's got a ridiculously high CHA and WIS. And plays those stats well, so there's your "bluff" (remember my original note? I myself am talking AD&D).

Oh he straight up admitted he'd become a pirate; he betrayed everyone to get the heart and turn it in to the authorities for his own personal gain even when that would've gotten them all killed. Nope, alignment change in my book.

High (17 or 18) dexterity. In fact I think everybody in the PIRATES movie (in fact, in any movie about swashbuckling pirates) has an 18 DEX!

Sure. Retrofit mine with a 3.5 tag and there's no issue.

Alignment change I can deal with. To Evil.

He'll betray folks for personal gain; do you suggest that Lawful Evil folks won't do that? He wants his old life back: he desires a return to the law and order of his Royal Navy, though employment with the East India Co. seems to suit him just fine.
