Give me flavor for non-exotic weapons

Whizbang Dustyboots

Gnometown Hero
My players, if they survive their current encounter, will be getting geared up somewhat for the challenges to come, including getting a mix of ordinary, masterwork and magic weapons. I'd like to make the magic weapons in particular (stats already determined) special, so I'd love to pick everyone's brains for interesting-looking swords, axes, hammers and the like.

Any particular ideas? Remember, the stats are pre-determined at this point, I'm just looking for flavor.

Physical description, that sort of thing? Sure, can do. You want any given spread of weapons in particular, or just whatever springs to mind?

Let's see, here's a couple that we've had show up (just the descriptions included):

Visceral Ripper - A curved short sword with one serrated edge, and a tip that curves backwards in a hook. Stab in, yank out.

Cutlass - A variant description for a short sword.

The Tines of Pain - A longsword that is really composed of two smaller, single eged blades placed with a small gap between them. It looks like a normal longsword with the center 1/4" missing. When swung or striking, it resounded with loud, perfect tones.

Judgement - This is a large, heavy, two-handed maul. The head of the mall has a gauntleted fist symbol on each of it's two striking surfaces. On one side of the head the words, "Lies will condemn you." is written in dwarven runes. On the other side of the head, the words, "Truth will free you." is written in dwarven runes. On the top of the head the words, "All will be judged." is written in dwarven runes.

And, two from our current Earthdawn campaign:

The Crimson Cleaver - This enormous two-handed blade resembles a large meat cleaver more than anything else. It's blade is chipped and scarred from many a battle, but it's edge is still razor sharp. (This one is carried by the Troll in the group, Grim).

Picklock - This delicate little rapier-like weapon resembles a key, and can be broken into several different tools (think Cloud's sword from Final Fantasy Advent Children). (This one is carried by the Windling in the group, Tarai).

Physical descriptions of swords, hammers, maces, axes, and the like. Sorry, should have specified.

And Judgement is awesome, going to steal that for this encounter or a later one.

Seventh Sanctum has a sword generator, i use it, frequently.

Seventh Sanctum's Sword Generator said:
This sword has a keen blade with a purple hue to it, with a pattern made of lightning bolts engraved on it. Its' grip is formed like a tree.

This sword has a jagged blade of a blue color, with faces engraved on it. Its' grip is wrapped with blue leather.

This sword has a blade of a red color, with comets and demons engraved on it. The guard is a butterfly.

This sword has a serrated blade with a black hue to it, with demons and eyes engraved on it. Its' pommel bears a series of pearls.

This sword's guard is triangle-shaped. Its' grip is formed like a minotaur.

This sword has a blade whose form suggests an arrow. The guard is wave-shaped.

This sword's guard is cross-shaped. Its' grip is formed like an angel with its wings wrapped around its body.

This sword has a oddly-formed blade of a black color, with a pattern made of spirals engraved on it. Its' pommel bears a series of pearls.

This sword has a blade of a silver color. The guard is an eye, with the blade through the pupil. Its' grip is of a gray metal set with aquamarines and opals.

This sword has a blade with jesters and swirls engraved on it. Its' grip is of a blue metal set with topazes and pearls. The pommel bears a series of garnets.

it's easy to adapt to any other weapon type: for example:

This Mace has a oddly-formed Head with moons and arrows engraved on it. The butt is pyramid-shaped.

This Staff has a shaft with a pattern made of arcs and rectangles engraved on it. The Knob is formed like a hand making a mystic gesture.

This Bow has a drawstring of a gold color. Its' grip is formed like a woman holding a aquamarine.

Heaven's Shot: A composite longbow ornately carved so that each arm of the bow resembles the wing of an angel

Hell's Arrow: As above but resembles a demonic bat-like wings

Iron Rain: A heavy two-handed sword with a storm/rain motiff acid-etched in the blade.

Sun and Moon: A two-headed flail with the heads molded to resemble a stylized moon and sun.

Chain of Memory's: An ornate quarterstaff made from a single chain that was welded link-to-link in to a staff then transmuted to wood. Each link has had the grain of the wood magically altered to form elven script spelling out the life story of an ancient mage.

Diamond Edge: A dagger who's blade is a single spike of rough diamond

Misery's Lash: A whip made of tanned halfling hides and handle who's grip is made of woven halfling hairs.

The Butcher's Bill: This is essentially a hand axe that looks more like a butcher's cleaver. A strong reinforced grip holds a large squarish blade about twice the length of the handle. The blade its self is nicked and scarred, but not in a way that would harm its use as a weapon, and seems permenantly discolored as if by blood. Story goes that the butcher of a small town whose home was decimated by a dragon hunted the beast down and carved it up with this very blade. Others say that it the product of an evil canniblistic cult.

Janus: The blades of this battle axe are carved with the profiles of human faces. One is stalwart and rugged, the other obviously mad with rage.

Hand of Retribution: The heavy mace depicts a clawed hand holding a shard of rock. Perfect for a bane weapon or energy weapon, the rock glows with energy when used.

The Thorn: This rapier has a beautifully carved basket hilt shaped like a rose vine with thorns.

Tale Bearer: This greatsword has an intricitly carved battle scene on the blade depicting a human and elven army fighting against a hoard of demons or half dragons. When the weapon draws blood the human army surges forward agains their foe, when the user takes damage the tide of battle shifts. The scene is never the same twice, but over time the wielder can learn the full course of the battle.

Whiz,

Check your e-mail. I sent you a draft copy of our upcoming "The Keep of Lord Mmorpgus", a collection of oddly named magical weapons, armor, and items inspired by the odd naming conventions of certain MMORPGs. It might inspire you a bit. ;)

A shortsword, dagger, or punching dagger with a wide, triangular blade that's been intricately etched to resemble a stylized snow-capped mountain. The crossguard neatly hugs the base of the blade and made to resemble an equally stylized cloud.

A battleaxe or greataxe with an octagonal shaft of heavy brass. Rather than the standard crescent or wedge-shaped blade, the head of this axe is circular, arcing all the way around both sides and over top, looking almost like a bladed tear.

A battleaxe or greataxe whose head has been made to resemble the form of an angel with their wings forming the blades of the weapon, standing upon the wooden shaft.

A warhammer with a blunt, grooved, conical head (think like an orange juicer). The back of the weapon bears a flat disc as its striking surface, with a raised heraldric device - an eagle with wings upraised, a crown floating above its head and an arc of laurel clutched in its talons.

A spear or lance with a thick, spiraling head made of some odd white metal, reminiscent of a unicorn's horn in form, and bearing a bushy tuft of golden-white hair. The shaft is of a smooth black wood and the butt is capped in silver.

A greatsword with a heavy, thick-edged blade as wide as a man's hand and no point. The end is flat, almost as if it had been clipped, though the blade continues around the square points all the same. The weapon has no crossguard, and the entire affair is done in a lusterless dark gray iron, looking almost more like a headsman's tool than a proper weapon.

A flail with a conical head rather than a ball. The head resembles the form of a praying woman in a heavy robe.

A mace with a hollow iron head, larger than normal, with broad striations like those of a pumpkin. The weapon produces a clear, low ringing sound like a gong when struck.

A flail with three heads, each one worked to resemble the snarling face of an ogre. The chains themselves bear short but viscious barbs on each link, and the haft is wrapped in an uncomfortably toned pale leather.

A scimitar whose curving blade is etched to resemble a great cresting wave. The hilt is set with abalone and wrapped in a blue leather, and a dome cut saphire caps the pommel.

A rapier cleverly crafted to resemble a calla lily, the blade rising gracefully from the flower's pistil and the blossom itself curving down to form the basket hilt.

A falchion of odd construction, with a curving metal bar forming the spine of the weapon, and a blade made to resemble the spiked and jagged line of row upon row of shark's teeth, overlaid on one another.
