Giving alignment meaning.

I much prefer the allegiance system from modern. You can choose groups, individuals, ethics, ethos or whatever. It's more roleplay descriptive and then you can tune special abilities, powers and whatnot to the descriptors.

For example, you might have the typical allegiance to Law and Good. Or perhaps you have Romantic and Hedonistic. Might even have allegiance to Harpers and Heironius.

I suspect that PCs should have the "Player Character" alignment, which in essence means they may or may not be good, depending on how much loot is at stake, and how badly they've got it in for the bad guy. And if the loss of a precious magical item or chance to beat the villain is at stake, all bets are off ;)

in my games, there are no alignment spells, alignment items, or other things of that precise flavor.

i use a contract system where your allegiance as determined by whom you make contracts with is what is detected by spells and items.
