Battle of the Gods got me thinking about something similar I would like to propose. Who here would be interested in a game where you play as a noble in charge of a gladiator stable? What I'd like to offer:
Features
Essentially, it could be thought of in simple terms as a sports management game. The reason I say this and not a 'D&D Gladiator' is because the way combat would be handled. In a more perfect world you could control your gladiators in combat directing his every move. Since this would be a message board based system though, that could prove to be unfeasible since encounters would take sometime to finish. That's why I'd like to propose running the combat myself, with notes from the players on how they want their gladiators to act (and react). It wouldn't be a total judgement call on my behalf - instead I'll always refer to the stipulations you provided for this fight, like:
Basically the two types of commands you can use are proactive (ie, how to attack) or reactive (usually change tactics or do something when down to X hp). This is probably the biggest stickler for the game.
If you wouldn't want this though, I'm open to suggestions. Similar to Battle of the Gods, if more people voted for combat handled in a 24 hour = 1 round (or 48 hours for one complete round) for more control of their gladiators during the fights I wouldn't be adverse to it either. The only problem would be showing who was where. I don't have access to a graphic program or a square map to pass off as an arena so the map, and where the gladiators would be on it, couldn't be done right now (PS7 on the broken computer atm, still waiting for the Video card to arrive). Maybe there are ways around not using a combat map. A featureless arena with only distance from your opponent as the important factor (though, with multiple opponents this too could get wierd).
Anyway, just post and tell me what you think.
Features
- You would begin with a small pool of money and a low-level gladiator, pitting him against the gladiators of other players or monsters, gaining money and experience.
- Gladiators on the market would come in a variety of shapes and sizes, including races found in sources other then the PHB.
- Custom-tailor your gladiator to your hearts desire as he gains levels.
- Use the auction market to trade, buy, or sell gladiators.
- Play dirty tricks on opponents to gain an advantage through the use of poisons or rigging a match - if you don't get caught.
- Gamble on the outcome of the game in different ways.
- Streamlined combat

- Charge the opponent at the first opportunity possible
- Always attack with the bastard sword and spiked shield unless down to 1/4 hp; then just use the sword with shield for AC
- If down to 50% hp use healing potions
- Etc. etc. etc.
