GLEE #25: Grilled Cheesus

Ryan Murphy is calling this week's episode the most controversial yet, mainly because it talks about religion. Kurt and Mercedes also get more to do this week (and next week). We finally see Kurt's dad again, but did they make him a full cast member just so they could kill him off after only one episode? (I hope not.)

As promised, here's the playlist:

Puck sings "Only the Good Die Young", originally performed by Billy Joel
Mercedes (with Tina and Quinn) sings "I Look to You", originally performed by Whitney Houston
Rachel sings "Papa, Can You Hear Me", originally performed by Barbra Streisand
Kurt sings "I Wanna Hold Your Hand", originally performed by The Beatles
Finn sings "Losing My Religion", originally performed by R.E.M.
Mercedes sings "Bridge Over Troubled Water", originally performed by Simon & Garfunkel (they did Aretha Franklin's version)
The glee club sings "One of Us", originally performed by Joan Osbourne

The best numbers were Rachel's (not annoying this time!) and Kurt's. I think they used the same arrangement as Across the Universe.

Seems like they managed to make both religious folks and atheists upset. Not sure that's something to be proud of.

It is, in the sense that they didn't choose to take the route that would make anyone comfortable. Question everyone's beliefs, then nobody's happy!

Somewhat tangent to that -
I lost my Dad this summer. While I'm not a teen still working out my identity and how to deal with the world, I still say Kurt was played very well. The whole thing was more touching than I'd expected it to be. Well done!

Think this ep was great, as with most Kurt and Mercedes episodes. Only sore spot was Finn singing Losing My Religion. Oww that was pretty awful.

I actually thought that was good. No, it wasn't sung sweetly, but we're talking about a guy who is singing about losing faith - that should show some pain (something the original song lacks, IMHO).

"Losing My Religion" isn't about losing faith. It's title is a Southerism for losing one's temper. The song is about anger. Just nitpicking.

I've pretty much given up on Glee. It's only worth watching for Jane Lynch, and that's enough for me. I give it one more season, two at most.

The original may be about that. But what a song "is about" depends upon context. They took the phrase more literally. Similarly, consider this episode's version of "I Wanna Hold Your hand". Every other time I've heard it has been about romantic love, but they cast it in a different light, and it meant something different.
