Glitterdust

Is it only my impression that Glitterdust is a little bit too powerful? An AoE Spell, that blinds everyone in the target area, bypasses Spell Resistance and has a very valuable utility effect (negate invisibility) all in one measly 2nd level spell? Wouldn't it be more balanced and fitting to reduce the effect to dazzle the targets?

Doesn't the blindness only last as long as the duration of the spell? The Blindness/Deafness spell has a duration of permanent, so it's not as good as Blinding someone permanently (or until it gets dispelled at least). The Will save to negate blindness is nice though, compared to B/D's Fort save (though good against low Fort creatures).

Area effect is a 10-ft radius, not too large of an area. For catching invisible foes you'll need to have an approximate idea of where they might be (when you are being attacked by an invisible foe). This is again inferior to the See Invisibility spell which allows characters to see an invisible creatures within their normal range of sight.

Glitterdust bypasses SR, that looks to be a bit much, and the only part that might be too powerful I'd wager. Though goodluck using a 2nd level spell on a creature with SR, usually at higher levels and have decent saves vs a relatively low DC, regardless if they are weak ones or not. ;)

Well, the duration of Blindness may be permanent, but usually you don't blind an enemy and let him get away with it. ;) The duration of glitterdust is just long enough to kill the now grossly weakened foe(s).
And the negate invisibility effect is not in all inferior to see invisibility. For one, it makes invisible opponents visible to all allies, while See Invisibility is only personal. Furthermore it's not affected by a nondetection spell, may be used to counter nonmagical darkness and detect hiding creatures.

I'm not saying, that Glitterdust is a killer for high-level monsters/characters, but in my opinion its overly powerful in the mid-level range, especailly if compared to other 2nd/3rd level spells.

IMO, glitterdust is one of the best 2nd lvl spells. But some spells are always stronger than others at each level, and I don't think it's too powerful for its level.

I think glitterdust is a great 2nd level spell. It's a bit on the powerful side with the blind piece and illuminate invisible oppoents, but I don't consider it overpowered. The area of affect helps a little and the duration help tone it down a little.

Yeah, it's certainly one of the best 2nd level spells. But bump it to 3rd, and it's badly underpowered. It's right where it belongs, I think.

hehe there was a thread not too long ago about Glitterdust being a worthless spell :)

Yup, my illusionist/conjurer never understood that thread. But well, I kind of like spells tha do something more fun than Xd6+Y. That's what sorcerors are for...:D

I love the spell, but you don't see a lot of Sorceror's picking it up.

I remember our party was fairly low level and yet encountered a Beholder. We were kind of trapped and half our party was heavily battered from a recent fight. The sorceror cast 'Dust after Dust on the Beholder and it eventually failed its saves. He almost single handedly took the beholder out. It was inspiring.
