Gloomwrought Looks Good!

Just took the leap and pre-ordered it. I've liked everything I've seen so far, and I'm fairly certain my Dark Sun campaign will end up in the Grey soon enough. Should be able to work some of it in, though obviously not the city itself*.

* - Except perhaps as a skeletal city, tended by the Keepers but with no remaining inhabitants. Possibilities, possibilities...

I was wondering.. would the cards make a good tool to use with an adventure set in the Mournland on Eberron?
That is an excellent question.

Otherwise, I'd heartily approve of an Eberron-type supplement that has the current design direction applied to it. Hell, we're getting Neverwinter, why can't we get a Sharn or Stormreach?

When is the release date?

[-]March[/-] May 17th. Which, also in theory, means that premier game stores will likely be getting it by next week or so. Or possibly earlier, since it sounds like some copies are floating around already.

For myself, I like the idea of the Despair Decks, so much more than the concept or implementation of the Fortune Cards.

My only concern is that the way it works actually makes it feel... well, a bit too beneficial for the PCs. They suffer a minor temporary downside in return for later getting a huge temporary bonus. I'm trying to think of ways to fiddle a bit with the system so that PCs won't get a Despair card and feel too excited over it.

That said, one nice side-effect is that the Despair cards encourage PCs to keep adventuring. Each Milestone gives them a chance to shake off the Despair effect and gain a bonus for the rest of the day. And it even makes sense in character that as they gain these bolstering emotions, they'll want to keep on going rather than rest and let despair start overwhelming them again...

I'm not up on any Mournland developments post the original Eberron book, but the Fear & Madness cards seem like they could be appropriate. Not too sure about Apathy?

I'm thinking of using the cards when my PCs visit Dream. Probably Madness & Apathy for the more pleasant areas of the dreamscape, and Fear & Madness as they approach the Eternal Nightmare (or whatever I end up calling it).

I got my hands on mine on Wednesday.

That is basically the big thing ... it is a temporary downside for a better bonus (in most cases the upside is an inversion of the penalty imposed, although some need a bit of liberty to get there) but it still requires at least 2 encounters just to get to that point, and even then, there is a 45% chance (if you don't have the synergy skill) that you have to wait until the next milestone. So, it's a chance at getting the benefit, while you are guaranteed to have 2 encounters where the entire party is disadvanted.

You are just getting everything lately Walter! What are the lowest and highest level monsters in the book? I saw on the excerpt today that they had some Bodaks and other things, statted around low epic tier. Pretty solid looking supplement and I can't wait to get mine from what I've seen.
