GM needs help with a Time Loop idea!

For a little backstory, I am going to be running a campaign set in Forgotten Realms, where the heroes have to seek out Lashan Aumersair, who almost conquered the Dalelands to rule a united kingdom under him. It is 20 some years later, and Lashan is known (according to behind the scenes lore) to have gone into an abandoned Wizard's academy in Myth Drannor to seek artifacts to help him conquer the Dales after he lost the war. He is said to have been imprisoned there by a Lich in some kind of magical spell, since the Lich now has control of the academy ruins.

In my idea, I was thinking it would be fun to have the entire dungeon academy to be caught in a time loop. I thought it would be fun to have the pc's caught in a Groundhog Day, where they can die and just come back, trying to figure out what has caused the loop. I like the idea they can meet Lashan there, and help him overcome the loop, figuring out how to get past the traps and monsters in the dungeon. I just can't figure out how to put it all together. I would love advice on how to proceed.

I have vague ideas about some kind of time artifact that causes the loop and is guarded by a golem, and they have to destroy the artifact or something, or they have to get the artifact and set it to a time when they entered the dungeon, to warn themselves not to enter it. It could be that they enter the Lich's spell, where he has Lashan in the loop just to torture him even. Any advice would be awesome and appreciated greatly!
