Strangely enough, the last 6 to 8 years we have been using GM created characters. We are not beholden to them and may create other characters at any time; but, we haven't save for 1 or 2 exceptions.
This preference happened in my group several years back when the party split up (by a large distance) and the GM rolled up NPCs for the players to play as we played each main character in separate sessions. We. Had. A. Blast.
Ever since we have been using GM pre gens. It really helps with building story and motivation and creates all sorts of interesting arcs.
Currently, we have three campaigns going in the same shared world with three different GMs. We are slowly discovering/creating the world though our games. The pre gens really help us focus and have distinct goals...so smooth beginnings and endings.
