Gnomes and Item Creation

This is going to sound like a strange question. If a gnome has a non-spellcasting class (for example, Commoner 3), is he still considered a level 3 caster for the purposes of taking Craft Wonderous item?

I don't believe he can take the metamagic feat to begin with. No more so than a Yuan Ti can take craft wonderous item because of it's inane spellcasting.

Going purely from memory, the prereqs to take a metamagic feat are spellcasting as a class ability.

I would say no, because the gnome doesn't have the ability of a 3rd level spellcaster - he can just cast a spell as a sorcerer of his class level. Compare that to a dragon or other similar creatures, which cast spells as a sorcerer (or cleric, or whatever)of level X, and could take the feat.

Two things:

1) The feat prerequisite isn't to "have the ability of a 3rd level spellcaster." It's to have a certain caster level.
2) Gnomes always use their spell-like ability to speak with animals and their ability to cast racial spells (if their Intelligence is high enough) as 1st-level casters, regardless of their class level. The thing you say about having a caster level equal to their class level just isn't true.

So the reason this doesn't work isn't that the gnome doesn't have the abilities of a 3rd level caster. It's that he has a caster level, but it's not high enough. He could take the Scribe Scroll feat (which only requires caster level 1), but it wouldn't be very useful to him.

On an entirely other note, Inane Spellcasting would be a perfect gnomish feat...

Actually, it's "Spellcaster level 3rd+" Commoner levels are not spellcaster levels, and a 2nd level cleric with Healing domain couldn't get brew potion, even though he has caster level 3 for healing spells, because he's not a 3rd level spellcaster.

That'll teach me to not check the SRD - I assumed the first poster knew what he was talking about when he implied that the gnome Com3 had caster level 3.

However, other races (like drow) do increase the caster level of their innate spells as they increase in class level, and what I said above applies to them.

I don't believe so, although Dragons may be a special case, as they have advancing spellcasting as a class ability. At work and going off memory though too, so there may be some loopholes that are exploitable in the wording too.
