D&D General God Drama FR

Zardnaar

Legend
So thinking about an FR thing maybe near Baldurs Gate.

I'm thinking of a heresy involving Amauntor/Lathender and maybe Torm. Other obvious ones are the dead 3, shar/selune, gods of Fury vs nature.

I grew up with Greek/Roman/Egyptian mythology though. It's not for everyone. I'm going to bring it up at session 0 anyway.

Anyway thoughts? No gods, FR style, around but not really eg GoT.

Are you wanting to do something like a war in the heavens, gods squabbling, or something like the Aten worship.

Could be good depending on how much your players interact with it, but might otherwise just be background.

Probably something like the Wten with interesting NPCs and Shar or whoever stirring the pot.

Exactly. Unless the PC is a Cleric or Paladin, most players could care less what the gods are doing. Usually because the gods could care less what the PCs are doing.

One of the first adventures I designed & ran in high school had the gods appearing in human forms and helping the PCs (just information and basic stuff). It was fun having the deities on deck like in the old myths.

And that's why I'm gonna ask the players what they think.

I'm sure he'll move on to something else, Zard normally has a few campaign ideas cooking.

I think modelling something on the Aten heresy would be great, Amaunator trying to become the one true god, or perhaps his followers are trying to make him their one true god (technically a trinity, the other two being Ankhenaten and his wife (Nefertari or Nefertiti, I always get those two names mixed up).

How will the other gods react, with them feeding on belief, will they start to lose worshippers and power, as Amaunator grows in strength taking up their portfolios in the process? Will he form a trinity with Lathandar and Selune? Both are related to the sun, it could become religious dogma that lathandar is the son and Selune the wife. Is Amaunator behind these changes or has he just remained silent as he believes the realms will benefit beneath his order.

Sort of related, I don't like gods dying when they lose their worshippers, I can live with them losing power but I like the thought that they are demogods who gain power through worship which allows them to ascend to the higher ranks of lesser or greater deity.

I also think that you could just have this happen in the background with first proselytising priests, then a flock of followers that become and army. Players may or may not engage, but they'll likely remember stuff happening.
