I plan to run a campaign where the characters are fallen gods and know nothing about being a god. So I was wondering what I could do to bring the characters to become gods? I was thinking defeating angels and by doing such gaining power. I would like other suggestions please.

learning of their former power and sparking there desire to become gods again, there they journey for many years to find keys to the temple of gods on Mt Olympus (for example) where they must then destroy there replacements

or become worshipped as a god by another culture...

Learning of their prior existance by:

Finding a fallen temple to themselves. (How's that for a great visual?)

Finding/defeating an ancient demon/dragon/angel who recognizes them.

Then regaining power by:

Heros quest.

Gaining enlightenment.

Eating the ambrosia of the gods.

Defeating some of the current gods and taking their power (back?).

Well there are a number of ways of going about it, but the best (in my opinion) is through glory. Characters gain 'hero-worship' that inexorably leads to divinity. I have a great set of rules for this which are almost finished.

Another way is (along the lines you suggest), characters taking power/divinity from others. However, to me, this only makes sense if the characters are already at least partly divine (or Outsiders).

The characters could also have divinity (temporarily?) bestowed upon them, acting as 'chosen of'/or proxies for their gods.

The characters could have divinity imparted through some sort of artifact, or very powerful epic magic item (such as a Mantle of Divinity).

You might find a few ideas in the following thread:

I have this campaign idea in the back of my mind for a few years now. The way I phrase it is that the characters need to remember their past. Some campaign thoughtsI had:
- Seeing a strange, old, temple where the gods' statues look like they do.
- Facing a god/devil that already remembers, perhaps he doesn't know they don't, or perhaps he does and manipulates them.
- Seeing a temple devoted to them that uses another, perhaps corrupted, image of themselves.
- Playing out a prophecy about the gods.
- Playing out the history of a god's actions, reliving the past or remembering past similar deeds.
- Dream sequence where the PCs do, indeed, play gods or dream of the god's realm.
- Defeating apocalyptic prophecies only to find out the world is already doomed, and that they have come down to earth to reforge it not to save it.

I plan on using a Greek-like setting. Most NPCs are low-level mooks, with BBEG NPCs and monsters being scions of deities, with the exception of arcane magic which is available to all but is evil (so high-level wizards too). XP is used to mark increasing memory, and magic items are replaced with magical abilities appropriate for the recommended wealth guidelines; there are no or little real magic items. Characters will probably begin as 0-level characters, without special abilities.
