Gods and Avatars

Hey, i was just looking through the Deities and Demigods book but since i didnt have the money, i couldnt buy it

I do have a question about it which should be pretty important in the next session of a game i am involved in; How many Avatars can a god have active at one time, and how is their strength determined?

As far as I can tell, and I own the book, there is no answer to that question. I haven't read the entire book yet, but I have yet to find any information within that sheds more than a miniscule amount of light on this. Hopefully, I, or someone else, will be able to answer that question. Myself, I'm looking forward to Faiths & Pantheons for more avatar info, as I have yet to find much in Deities & Demigods.

I anyone knows if this info is in Deities & Demigods, let me know.

The god must have the Avatar Salient Ability (not all do). An Avatar takes 1 year to form, and its divine rank is equal to 1/2 the deities divine rank rounded down. The deity can have a number of Avatars determied by thier god status; Lesser = 5, Intermediate = 10, and Greater =20; Demi-Gods cannot have Avatars. An Avatar cannot itself have an Avatar, so no power pyramids.

Avatars are the same as the original deity, save all stats which gain a divine rank bonus (which are many) are reduced according to the Avatars divine rank, the Avatar has fewer Salient Abilities, and the Avatar cannot remote sense/communicate.

This is all described under the Avatar Salient ability on page 36 of Deities and Demigods.

I would highly recommend that you not try to use an Avatar without having the Deities and Demigods supplement handy and double checking it to keep the Avatar in play book-legal. The Salient Abilities and divine traits are complex enough to warrant an extra ounce of care when using god-like entities.

I would recommend giving Avatars half the Hit Dice of original Deity.

Also, a Diety can have no more avatars than it can remote view at a time - 20 for Greater, 10 for Intermediate, and 5 for Lesser. Note that while it's divine rank is halved, it's levels aren't - it is likely beefier than a god of equal rank.
