Golem control?

A couple weeks back in my game we had a rather interesting situation come up. I let the players run with it because I thought quite a clever idea but would it work?

They were fighting a trio of flesh golems and their creator. After dispatching the mage/creator, the party sorcerer used a change self to look like the creator, and commanded the golems to stop. Having never come across that situation before but thinking it a clever way round the golems I let it pass and allowed the sorcerer a bluff check, which he passed.

Good ingenuity but would that have worked?

I would have been more inclined to use a Disguise check (after all, you're impersonating the creator), but it's inventive enough that it's reasonable - the first time, at least.

Then again, the Golem's recognition of its master could be a matter of magic - no refference is made to the form the master is in at the time, after all.

It's creative, so I would probably have limited the golems to one action on their next round, sort of a surprise and confusion effect on their part.
