Good affiliations for PCs when starting a new campaign

I think this is a rule that more campaigns need. When you are pretty much going to stick together no matter what because otherwise there would be no story, its an invitation for a certain kind of player to just cause trouble/control everything/be a pain... This is why I perfer that characters be created with preexisting ties. When you make a bunch of random characters, its fine for a one off adventure where you're thrown together, but gets increasingly more strained as you go along.

One person mentioned having the characters have known each other since childhood. I'd considered having them have been each other's "imaginary friends" and the confusion that ensues when they all discover each other's reality as adults... That could make a fun story...
