good base class for dread pirate?

Edit: forgot to say. fighter is a possibility but I wanted a bit more finesse in his fighting style, not just a pounding machine. something that kicks ass and puts on quite a show.

No reason you have to make a fighter into a tank. Give him some of the more finesse types of feats and you can have a swashbuckling sort of fighter.

TheLe, I'll give a look into your book, and ask my DM if she allows it. I think it may come in handy for our next campaign setting

Cthulhudrew, I'm looking at some feats now, if I can't find the complete warrior book, I?ll give the fighter a shot

hmm, I'm starting to think the swashbuckler/rogue combo is pretty good, does anyone have the tables of the swashbuckler?

here is his story so far: a mutiny took place and my DP (first mate) got his eye cut out, and thrown to the sea while trying to avenge his captain. defeated, injured and humiliated he got washed away into the docks of a close city, where he'll spend the next months of his life trying to gather a crew and a ship so he can seek revenge on the traitors who blinded him and killed his captain.

There is indeed a swashbuckler class in Unorthodox Pirates.
Sneak Peek: Unorthodox Pirates: Swashbuckler
Some pirates live only to kill, rape, plunder and drink themseles stupid. Swashbucklers look down on these scurvy dogs; for a Swashbuckler, it’s all about style. This type of pirate knows that it’s not what you do, it’s how well you do it. Theirs is the sword-whirling, chandelier-swinging, over-the-top school of combat, and they never pass up an opportunity to show off their skills or spin a tale of their latest daring escape. When a swashbuckler enters the room, he or she commands attention – especially from the opposite sex.

Sadly, only three classes offer appraise as a class skill: Bard, Rogue and Spellthief (Cad). So to get 8 ranks in it, you got to have at least 1 level in one of those three classes.
The Commerce Domain from the Eberron Campaign Setting grants a Cleric Appraise as a class skill. Cleric of Kol Korran (or the Sovereign Host at large) have access to the domain.

...I'm just sayin.

Just to clarify, to get 8 ranks in it at 5th level. Any class can get 8 ranks in it at 13th level (meaning the first Dread Pirate level would be 14th level). You don't have to take the class at the cheapest level every time (admittedly, if you are focusing on that concept, you'll likely want to).

So before I push ye overboard to feed the sharks, I'm gonna be given you a moment to pray to whatever gods ye fear that you might be granted a swift and merciful death for your crimes of robbery, murder and general unsavouriness! When I think dread I think Rastafarian. How 'bout a ganja smokin' seafaring druid from the islands? Druids can kick ass while they put on a show.
