Good but obscure movies you've recently discovered...

Not that I have anything against Hollywood blockbusters, but those already get mentioned a lot (if not here, in the press). But there are a lot of other good movies that come out that fly under the radar, but are on Netflix or BB Online (or some other online rental place).

You can find them somewhat by simply looking at all the new releases or generated recommendations, but those are more miss than hit for me.

So I figured I'd start a thread to recommend them. And to start with one I just watched and inspired me to start the thread.

Silk - It's a ghost movie from Taiwan. Not exactly one of those long haired creepy kid ghost movies (as popularized by The Ring), but kinda one. (I guess that's just how Asian ghosts are)

A team studying anti-gravity is doing so by researching ghosts (since ghosts can ignore gravity, although there's a deeper explanation why in the movie). Finally they find a ghost (of a kid), but they want to find out more about him, but since he doesn't talk, they get a cop assigned to the research team who can read lips.

There's a layer of either technobabble (ie, made up ) or Michael Crichton style science (made up but inspired by something real) to it involving "Menger Sponges". But it's mostly a horror movie. Not so much gorey-horror (though there is one stomach turning scene), but lots of tension. But also good characterization, at least of the cop and the head scientist.

Not a perfect movie, one bad CG scene most notably. But I would give it a B+ or A-.

Primer. Awesome movie about time travel. Reminded me a bit of Memento, but even more twisty turny. It's a low budget story about some guys who invent a time-travel machine. You turn it on and leave it running. At any later point, you can climb inside the machine and travel back to when you turned it on. And it kinda takes off from there. Won't give away any of the twists. Worth checking out for sure.

Igby Goes Down.

Caught it the other night on cable. It's a little indie film from 2002 starring Kieran Culkin, Claire Danes, Jeff Goldblum and Susan Sarandon. Terrifically clever and heartbreakingly sad in places. It's like a better, contemporary version of Catcher in the Rye, one that you enjoy if you're past the age of 17. Best film I've seen in ages.

Immortel (ad vitam).

I first saw this on Sci-Fi late at night but it is not one of thiers. This is a French made film but it is filmed in English. The movie is by Enki Bilal who directed this adaptation of the first part of his own Nikopol trilogy comic book series. The movie has a very Blade Runner feel but done in the mixed cgi-live actor style of Sin City or Sky Captain. It mixes a future Blade Runner/Cyperpunk world with the god Horrus. Like Blade Runner the movie is low in action but very interesting. For those who care the subject matter is very adult and not for kids. I'm not sure if it was ever rated but even edited for TV it is something that should only really be shown after midnight do to the adult nature of the story.

Nice thread. I haven't gotten to Silk yet and hadn't even heard of Immortel. I'll move them to the top.

Not all recently discovered, but all viewed within the last month. I keep a running list:

Brick
Henry Fool
Fay Grim
Zero Day
Before Sunrise
Before Sunset
Invisible Mountains
Igby Goes Down
Grandma's Boy
The Machinest
Match Point
The History Boys
Starter for 10
Better Luck Tomorrow
Green Street/Hooligans

The above are all excellent. In horror:

The Mad
Subject Two
Jekyl + Hyde
The Hole
Feast
Severance
Suicide Club (Jisatsu Sakuru)
Pulse (Kairo)
Deep Red (Shinku)

A movie I came upon and rented is called Unknown. It sort of reminded me of a mix between Memento and Saw. Not that it was horror, but the only reason it reminded me of Saw was how it begins. People wake up in a room, all have lost their memory (or so it seems), and they aren't sure who they can trust. But they have to work together to figure out who is who, and how they got there, and why, and how to escape.

It was a good movie, but not as good as Memento. Still worth a rent IMHO.

Oh, and it has a GREAT cast:

James Caviezel
Greg Kinnear
Bridget Moynahan
Joe Pantoliano
Barry Pepper
Jeremy Sisto

(to name a few)

A few other great movies...

Boondock Saints
Reminded me a lot like Snatch and filmed in a Tarantino-esque style where you see the result of a scene before you see how the scene got that way.

Equilibrium
Been awhile since I saw this one, but a lot of people comapred it to The Matrix in terms of action (not story).

Cube
Can't really compare it to any other movie. Essentially, a few people wake up in a giant labrynth in the form of a cube, and they need to solve puzzles and such in order to escape. There were spin-offs of this that I have not seen yet, such as HyperCube.

I've seen this one before, and I loved it. Just to help you out, don't bother with 2 unless you really want to, because popular opinion says it is god-awful.

However, pick up the prequel, or Cube(^)3. It is a true spiritual successer while still being a prequel. It is very, very good. Almost answers some questions, but not ones you would ask.

I liked Cube 2, but haven't seen the third one. Either way, the first one is indeed an excellent movie. Gotta second Boondock Saints - lots of fun. And Equilibrium rocks. Some sweet action scenes (the one with the dog is awesome) and a cool set of ideas as well. Good recommendations all round there, RigaMortus2 - I'll have to check out Unknown if you're as on the money with that one :).

Maybe not so obscure to folks in the US (but I had never heard of it until it came on TV the other week over here) is The Butterfly Effect. It's another time-travel story (I have a soft-spot for those) that deals heavily with alternate timelines. I really enjoyed this one, especially the way it used its own internal rules to craft an interesting story.
