Good (card) Suit names?

I question why per se 8 suits, why not 6/20?

Personally, I would try to maintain some closeness to 'regular' cards, and have such titles included as: the King, Queen, Knight, Magi, Priest, Warrior etc.

The second is the answer to the first. You know Wizard decks? They have the regular cards plus 4 wizards and 4 jesters.

8/15 is like having 2 decks with different backs and a Wizard and Joker in each suit.

Tempting (get it? tempting? get it? AHAHAHAHAA... heh... pheww)

A little on the pessimistic for the whole deck to be devoted to sin :)

I like to think of these as the 120 building blocks of the reality I'm creating.
How about Lust, Gluttony, Greed, Sloth, Wrath, Envy, Pride and Hope?

Hope would obviously be the highest suit. :)

You know, you might be onto something there. Let me keep pondering.
I'd also suggest the original ordering be their suit strength.

Superbia > Avaritia > Luxuria > Invidia > Gula > Ira > Acedia
(Pride > Greed > Lust > Envy > Gluttony > Wrath > Despair or Sloth)

Hope > all of them, and I actually like the original translation of Acedia so "hope" and "despair" act as book ends on the progression. :)

Winter - The time of mages, when it is the perfect time to sit by the fire and research, or experiment with magic.
Wands
Rings

Spring - A time of growths, and trade
Coins
Gems

Summer - The time of warriors and fighting
Swords
Sheilds

Fall - The Harvest
Shears
Sheafs

This keeps with the four seasons idea, and also a male/female aspect to each set of suits.

I Ching, 8, maths

I had no idea the I Ching was broken down into 8 symbols...

interesting.

VERY interesting.

The I Ching yielding 8 basic states is based on its origins with 3 yarrow sticks or coins. Three components, 2 states each - simple maths gives us 2^3 = 8.

Really - it's that simple. The next question is... happenstance or design?

Elements: Earth, Fire, Water, Air, Time, Space, Life, Death (or, for the last two, substitute positive and negative).

Body parts: Eyes, noses, ears, tongues, hearts, minds, hands, feet.

Emotions: Love, hate, joy, rage, valor, fear, pride, guilt.

Celestial bodies: Sun, Moon, Stars, planets as appropriate to your setting.

Alchemical compounds: Gold, silver, copper, iron, tin, mercury, lead, [pick one: sulfur, salt].

Family members: Father, mother, son, daughter, brother, sister, uncle, aunt.

Domesticated animals: Dog, cat, horse, cow, pig, chicken, sheep, goat.

Directions: North, south, east, west, northeast, southeast, northwest, southwest.

Schools of magic: Abjuration, Conjuration, Divination, Enchantment, Evocation, Illusion, Necromany, Transmutation.

Wow, this is all very complicated and interesting.

Well, maybe go with an astrological emphasis?

Argh, here I go...

Fire, Water, Metal, Wood, Earth, Dark (yin), Light (yang), and Heaven (sky/air/aether). The Five elemetns of Taoism, combined with the concepts of yin and yang, and the central unifying element of aristotilean and japanese derivation.

Put into another set, it would be Mars (fire), Mercury (water), Venus (metal), Jupiter (wood), Saturn (earth), Sun (yang), Moon (yin), and Void (heaven). This matches up with actualy chinese astrology as well as I can make it.

Alternatively, just assign one suit to each of the 8 planets of the solor system (now that Pluto has been demoted). Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Neptune, and Uranus. This might not work if you want this to be applicable to non-earth settings, but it works pretty well.

I'm still working on names but here's the Ranks (by gender)

A (King / Queen)
B (Sage / Crone)
C (Shaman / Witch)
D (Knight / Maiden)
E (Ten)
F (Nine)
G (Eight)
H (Seven)
I (Six)
J (Five)
K (Four)
L (Three)
M (Two = Child)
N (One = Babe)
O (Scoundrel / Seductress)

Three thorugh Ten depict various adult members of the human community, from shepherds and fishermen to warriors and shieldmaidens.

Suits still outstanding.
