Good d6 books for Star Wars SAGA

Thanks Donovan. Looks like others don't think much of the WEG material?

It was great in its time but the official adoption of the EU material by Lucas has made them mostly obsolete. Things to be gleaned from the WEG books can be found in the Essential guides or gained by osmosis from playing video games or reading novels.

Part of it depends on how much of a stickler you are for Lucas-derived "canon," particularly when it comes to stuff that takes place prior to the Original Trilogy, especially where the Clone Wars are concerned.

While more and more of the crunch material is being recycled into Saga Edition, there is still a lot of good fluff regarding how to play certain character types to be found in the d6 books. Platt's Guide is practically how-to for anyone playing a smuggler character, and GG#10 gives a lot of useful advice on how a PC bounty hunter should approach their profession. Rebel Alliance and Imperial sourcebooks are good for how those respective organizations operate.

Not to mention the stat-free setting material, such as the Minos Cluster in GG#6 and the Tapani Expanse for Lords of the Expanse, or even the Elrood Sector books (which I never picked up but have heard some good things about). The Essential guides or even Wookieepedia will give you a general gist of a setting, but lacks a lot of the little details that the books themselves provide, not to mention they have a ready-made campaign arc, a boon for GM's with limited time and something the Essential guides or other resources lack.

Not at all. I loved the WEG books, but Donovan's post above pretty much answered the question.

The books that stand out in my memory are (in no particular order):
  • The Adventure Journals
  • Wanted by Cracken
  • GG9 Fragments from the Rim
  • The Far Orbit Project
  • Platts Starport Guide
  • Lords of the Expanse
  • Otherspace I & II
  • Flashpoint Brak Sector
  • Darkstryder Campaign

The further the book strayed from the characters and events in the movies the better. It's a big galaxy, not everything has to revolve around Luke, Leia, Han, et al.

While I assume WotC had their hands tied by licensing/approval issues, the weakness of the initial d20 products was that were completely tied to the new movies. For example, Secrets of Naboo. We are treated to more than anyone would ever want to know about the Queen's Handmaidens and the swiss cheese nature of the planet. Who cares?

On the other hand, the new Saga edition books are great. I figure its a combination of Lucas loosening up on what they are willing to approve, and the fact Rodney Thompson is heading up the effort.
