Good game for mixed experienced/newbies?

Which one do you recommend, and why?

Probably best bet is Core only D&D, but I do like WHFRP II. High lethality is not necessarily a big problem to me as when I started in OD&D(1974) characters didn't always live that long, and much depends on the players.
