Good "generic" campaign setting

Hi all,

One of the guys in my group is looking for a setting to DM in.

The problem he has with things like FR or Eberron is the proliferation of new PrCs, races, monsters etc.

What he is looking for is a basic world, with pretty much standard (core only?) races and classes, and that focuses more on the geography and population than on specific adventures or quirks.

HârnWorld, the basic boxed set consists of a large island, with four human kingdoms, a human republic, a ‘viking’ northland and two reclusive or hidden kingdoms, Evael forest, home of the elves and Azadmere, a dwarven mountain kingdom. There are also several human ‘tribal’ lands and much of the north central area is overrun by ‘orcs.’ The boxed set will give you a good idea of the flavour of the world, which is low fantasy and definitely medieval. Check out www.columbiagames.com for more information. The boxed set also gives some details of the Lythia, a large continent lying to the east of Hârn. Also, the whole thing is completely rules free though with lots of history, geography and population details, plus weather, trade etc.

He wants a living world to use a backdrop for his adventures without having the time to create one himself.

All input welcome - T

The Hârn fans produce a huge number of free downloads, which give details of individual settlements on Hârn. Just download Charmic or Lerenil from www.lythia.com to get a flavour of local details.

And, no I’m not an author of either.

Seconding both The Wilderlands and Harn, but they are very different. Harn is extremely detailed in terms of history, culture, economics, you name it, but it isn't D&D specific. The Wilderlands are extremely rich in plot hooks and cover the gamut of possible locales but the development of the land is left largely to the individual DM.

Nobody has mentioned Ptolus? I mean, there's an entire world in a city that's very core. Yes, it has a few things in it that are non-core, but talk about an off-the-shelf product that does all the work for you....

That said, if he wants something more vanilla, Greyhawk or Kalamar are decent.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

It's odd, but I'd only heard bad things about Kalamar in the past...

It can feel a little too generic, but maybe what you are looking for.

(And there is terra viejo in my sig! But actually we do also add stuff...its hard not to. It is all optional though)
