Good products to buy/advice for Clerics

Crusty Old Meatwad
I run a 10th level Ocean/War themed elven cleric, that is currently adventuring with a party in the Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil adventure (and I have been running the character since first level). The diety is the Drowned One, taken from the George R.R. Martin books (with some liberties). Alignment is True Neutral. Companions include a Ranger/Archer type (I believe he is an unfettered from Arcana Unearthed, but you get the idea), a Rogue, a fighter-type (actually one of the Oriental Adventures fighter-type prestige classes), and a sorceror. Recently, a druid also joined our group (which may help with some of the issues I am having).

I'm having some trouble enjoying the role playing aspects of the character lately. I've explored a lot of the ocean-oriented opportunities to role play the character, chosen spells that match that theme, but I feel like they are a bit worn out at this point.

Sadly, I have another character in a game that is on hiatus that I enjoyed a lot more (an Akashic skills-monkey). The contrast with this other character makes the issue more noticable for me.

It isn't a DM'ing issue at all. The DM is great, and he does everything one could ask for to help his players enjoy the game. I really think this is just an issue with my own lack of inspiration for this cleric character lately. It's the only cleric I've ever run, and I vaguely recall choosing that class simply because the group needed a cleric, and not because I started with a deep interest to play the character.

I've considered a prestige class, but I have never found one I particularly liked, and even the two I've worked on creating didn't seem particularly inspirational to me. I've also considered multi-classing...however the loss of spell levels would damage the party a bit, as this character is relied on for a great deal of the necessary spellcasting during the adventure. The adventure is pretty rough, and I suspect it will only get more difficult the deeper we delve into the mines we are in. Although, we did just pick up a druid into the party, so that may help.

I am looking for both advice, and a suggestion of cleric-oriented products that to purchase that people have found useful in developing their characters. I have Complete Divine (and actually all the Complete splat books and their 3.0 predicessors). I also have faiths and pantheons, and the book of divine might.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

In my mind, clerics got the shaft in terms of prestige classes. :D Complete Divine I feel is the worst of the complete books, Quinessential Cleric is not that great, and heck even the Clerics Hanbook in the days of second edition was pretty crappy.

Path of Faith is a good book, but I don't recall it really having anything like what you want in there. You might have luck with books the MEG's The Deep, of FFG's Seafarer's handbook. Those water based products might have prestge classes more for water oriented clerics in them.

Well... that's your problem, I suppose, and not one you will easily get around with more rule books.

Another D&D water book is Into the Blue by Bastion Press, although I don't remember prestige classes from it.

Living Imagination also has Broadsides! which is about naval stuff but I don't remember any prestige class stuff for water clerics.

Well that is indeed true. However, I think through some role playing changes, and possibly a prestige class or multi-classing, it can be allieved to some extent (hence my question). I am not specifically looking for "rules" books. I am more looking for ideas to help role playing this character and make it more interesting to play, whether they come from folks here or from a book. Rules could of course be useful for a prestige class or changes to the abilities of the character or something, but only as a means to a role playing end. I am not looking for a boost in power, as the power level seems to be just fine.

I could just let the character get killed off, or leave, and start a new one that has lots of ranks in use magic device or something and still fulfill the magic roles needed by the party while playing a totally different kind of character. However, I think that's like junking a perfectly good car because you don't like the color of the paint. I'm really just looking for ways to get a good paint job at this point...not junk the whole thing.

If you hurry, you can get Into the Blue for only $5, plus shipping, from Bastion's big sale, which ends today.

I have it, but have not looked thru it much, since I am absorbed by the Oathbound stuff I picked up at the same time. Still, this might at least give you some ideas for role play.

That was not what I meant to imply with "rule books". They just tend to have the PrC and stuff... well, in fact, all books seem to have PrC and stuff these days. ;)

Just read it as "books". :)

Maybe you could have your character abandon the ocean faith (there ain't so many oceans down in the temple, I suppose. ;))

Maybe your DM would let you (and present you with some ingame reasons) to change your deity?

This could turn your cleric upside down all by itself (new domains, new ways to use spells to enhance your concept, etc).

It would be, of course, a rather drastic change.

I was all set to buy it...and then they tried to hit me with an $8.00 shipping charge on this 96 page soft cover book, by media mail shipping. Come on! Their cost is about $4.00 to ship this item or less, by media mail...what's with the hidden handling charge!

I guess the shipping only works out to be a good deal if you order in higher quantity. I bought 9 books, and my shipping was $12 total.
