good rules for Boccob's Book?

Freely:

adv.
1. In a free manner; without restraint.
2. Without charge.

I am free to go to London, if I can scrape up the cash. But I still have to buy an airplane ticket. In other words, I can go freely to London in sense #1, but not in sense #2.

Applying the same reasononing to BBB, you can say that it allows him to write spells into it whenever he likes. Up to 45 spells, in fact. There is no restraint on his ability to do so, but he needs spells to copy, some spare time, and the appropriate pens and inks.

I don't see a problem here whatsoever.

The price to fill up a "normal" spellbook is 100 GP a page times 100 pages, so that is 10,000 GP.

BBB costs 9500 GP. It is a magic item, it does not help (directly) in combat, it has an increased spell holding capacity and can accept spell on its pages without monetary cost. These are all decent magic item abilities.

However, any wizard of sufficient level (subjective) will likely have a backup spellbook (or three). Unless he has a few BBB, he'll need to keep "regular" copies of his spells in a spellbook somewhere else.

Besides all this, where exactly is said wizard going to *find* 45 9th level spells? More realistically, I would guess the avg spell level to be around 4th or 5th, as there are more low level spells than there are higher ones.

My last point has to deal with scribing itself. When I was playing, it was kind of a downer for me to spend a couple thousand of GP scribing spells while the rest of the party bought "stuff".

Fighter: "Look Mr. Wizard, I bought myself a new masterwork sword, a horse, a waterclock, and a small cottage in the woods!"

Wizard: "Yeah, um, I can now cast a few more spells....but only if I prepare them that day...."

Yes. :)

I'm not blaming anything on anyone...

Just trying to present a viewpoint that says it's not that bad, certainly not enough to go out of the way to change it, IMO.

However, I did point out that the poster could do as he wished

I know. I agree though. I don't think it's overpowered either.

Granted. The 45 9th level spells would make BBB 810k worth, but that's pure exaggeration. With giving something "freely" (saying without costs), I get a bad feeling. Zenon's proposal seems to be a good solution (better than debating about the meaning of a single word ;)). The wizard should create his own BBB, so he needs a feat (create wondrous item) and must be at least of level 7. And the XP loss hurts a bit.

*shrug* Except this is wrong. Monte Cooke (you know, the guy who wrote the DMG) has clarified that freely in this case means "without charge". It costs nothing to add a new spell to a BBB.

Considering how much extra cash a wizard has to spend to scribe their spells into a spellbook, and how vulnerable wizards are because of their spellbooks, I really don't think this is a big deal.

After all, the wizard has to find the spells before he can put them in the book. The book doesn't magically fill up with spells by itself.

Ok Caliban...
I conceed to both your posts.

[edit] I was just proposing this as a way to nerf the magic item though... ;)
