No, no, NO! Crenshaw you're doing it completely wrong!

You don't put away your Descent game! You use all those wonderful fiddly bits from the Descent game in your 4e game! Those snap together dungeon sections are one of the best things ever invented for gaming! And all those plastic minis? Awesome!

And that's not even mentioning how you can use all those counters and terrain markers in the game. Just today I was counting out the little heart-shaped wound markers for representing Healing Surges. You can use the other counters to represent everything from which opponents the Paladin is marking to which enemies are bloodied.

Anyway, I'm thrilled that you had so much fun with your kids. Descent was also a "gateway drug" to 4e for my daughter (she's 7). I always say that the Descent boardgame was the best RPG money I ever spent that wasn't for core rulebooks so it has a special place in my heart.

I probably find this post the best ever read on Enworld so far.

I'm 27 and I started playing when I was the age of 8, there were no full translations to Italian of D&D that time, we just had the red box in our language and a few dices. I still remember what I felt when I first saw the young warrior facing the red dragon cover. WOOOOOOW.... I remember the unique and definitive feeling of D&D...

I also passed through the same path as you did. Board games frenzy.

I played 3e and 3.5, but whereas it could be played notwithstanding it was full of bad things and a nightmare for Dms (as I am), I didn't feel the same "old fashion" D&D thing... it lead to a situation where the worst thing about rpgs was fully supported: making the rules more important than the game and incouraging the players to say to the DM: "You can't do that!"

Now, my D&D is back.

Great to see more young players, Crenshaw. My son, too, has been playing 3.5 and now 4th. He's been playing since he was 7 and now has 5 years of experience.

Every Christmas was memorable because of family back in the 70's to early 80's, but my most memorable gifts were the blue box of fun and then each of the hard back PHB, DM Guide, and MM.

Tell your kids welcome to the game from another Dad and D&D fan!

FWIW, I currently play 3.5e D&D with my 11-yr old daughter and three of her friends plus another dad. ...So really, 3.5e ain't all that bad fer th' young folks.....

In my "older folks" games, we play 4e. Go figure.
