Goodbye to a faithful family friend

In that picture, Ares sure looks like a real trooper of a dog. It's sad to hear of his passing. You and your little ones hang in there.

My prayers are with you and your family.
My wife's cat died last year at the age of 20.
She knew that cat longer than she has known me!
Losing a family pet is tough, but as has been suggested, a memorial service can help.
We buried Kitty on the family property and placed a marker, surrounded by flowers on the grave.
My sister in law read a story called "The Rainbow Bridge" that was quite touching, and I read the poem "Tyger, Tyger"
It took over a year, but my wife finally decided she was ready to try a new cat. We now have two new fuzzy knuckleheads named Rory and Dilandau.
They could never replace our friend of 20 years, but they offer a whole new world of love and companionship.
I hope when the time comes that you can find another pet as special as Ares.

The veterinary clinic gave us a copy of that, along with a pawprint cast in clay.

That's very cool. Sounds like you have a great vet.
Our vet was very understanding when Kitty died. The entire staff made and signed a card for us and sent it a week later.
Having caring health professionals (human or animal) makes a world of difference.

I'm sorry to hear that--that's very hard.

I read a children's book recently, Tough Boris by Mem Fox, that deals with the issue of children who are afraid that showing grief equals weakness. If your kids have trouble with showing grief, it may be worth looking at.

Psion,

Sorry for your loss. Losing a member of the family is tough...

Our yellow lab is getting up there in years (9) and we are dreading the day.

I am very sorry to hear about this, Psion. It is always hard to lose a pet. When I was growing up, we have two cats who died young. My parents went ahead and buried them when we were not around. I miss that we were nver able to say goodbye. You should consider having a funeral and dressing up. It may provide some sense of closure for your daughters.
