Making a 17 into a 13 because it gives the same bonuses in a totally different system designed to give bonuses for lower stats is a severe disadvantage for the old stats. In order to have decent stats under your system your 1E stats would all have to be in the 20's."

Actually this would be correct at least according to the conversion manual wotc released when 3.0 came out, then you add your +1 for every 4 levels and you're done.

It only gets a little funky when dealing with the exceptional str score, where 18/01 - 18/50 is a 19, up to 18/00 being a 23.

You can find his complete write up at Gord's Greyhawk http://members.bellatlantic.net/~vze33gpz/flanpc.html#gord

That write up isn't complete but covers most of it. Omits the special abilities of the true-seeing sword. In fact (I went over the books again), it would seem the sword has a partial curse on it. When Gord is about to drop it or otherwise put it aside, it jumps back into his hand.

Of course that could be poetic license by Gary to indicate it allows a second saving throw.
