Got me an Orcus today!

In the 4427 pic, I think you need some of those tiny little AD&D 1e books that were published years ago stacked next to them, and a tiny little DM screen in front of Orcus. :)
Nonsense! Everyone knows that Devils make the best DMs! And best of all, it keeps them busy, so they don't run around actually performing evil deeds!

The Auld Grump, a good (well, evil) DM can maim, torture, and bewilder their victims, and have the victims thank him for it afterword....

I'm bitterly envious of your collection, just as I lament the fact that I didn't pick up at least 4 Gargantuan Black Dragons when they were just $20.

Guess I ought to grab an Orcus while I can.

That's an awesome collection of D&D minis you have there. Very nice indeed. I have a fairly sizeable collection but nothing of that magnitude.

Personally Orcus just isn't doing it for me though. Maybe it would look better in person but I just don't think he looks as "cool" as the Gargantuan/Colossus Dragons.

Could it be because the miniature is quite clearly an exact replica of the illustration of Orcus in the MM1, right down to the pose and everything?

I think it may be the paint job, which is pretty "Meh" in my opinion. I think for something as big (and expensive) as Orcus I expect a better job than he has been given.

Fair enough. I went and checked and it's not exactly the same pose as what's on the cover of the MM. I can see why you might not like the paint job, though.

I chose not to get a Gargantuan Black Dragon because of the way its wings were molded.

I thought that too - though, it may just be the lighting in the photos - because I was really expecting the gold paint to have more glister (and look more gold than dirty yellow), the skin to have more layers of shading, and just a lot more subtle detailing. I like the wings, though.

Though, I also thought the paint job was similarly subpar on the Colossal Red and Gargantuan Blue (though, I was willing to forgive the Blue because he was only $25, which made him inexpensive enough to repaint without feeling like I got hosed since an unpainted Reaper dragon would cost me that much while being only half the size and minus the iconic D&D appearance).

If I can find a cheap Orcus - which seems unlikely if it's truly a limited production - I'll snag him and repaint him. Because I do really like the sculpt.

Kinda makes me wish WotC would just crank the gargantuan/colossal iconics out as unpainted, or at least give consumers the option of buying them unpainted, at a greatly reduced price.

That was... unexpected - the box containing the Orcus figure that I am going to paint came today, and contained two Orcuses (Orci?) One is apparently part of my payment for painting the other. :) Given that I asked for a good deal less than the figure cost, I may waive the fee, if the player wants. (I won't argue if the player still wants to throw money at me, though if she does then I will spring for the pizza at the game or something. Otherwise it seems a bit much, eh?)

The two paint jobs are... not created equal - one is actually halfway decent out of the box, the other is much closer to what I expected. (Rather a lot of paint slopping, and a few places that only have a base color, with no shading at all.)

I will bring both to the game tomorrow and allow the player to choose, then discuss what she wants done with the mini - a complete repaint was what she wanted, sight unseen, but if (when) she chooses the better of the two figures it might really only need some minor filling around the wings, some matching colors, some shading, and some touch ups.

It pretty much comes down to what she wants for skin tone. (I always pictured Orcus more tanned flesh than any shade of red.) I can trim a lot off of my original time estimate if she likes the base colors.

The difference between the two is quite noticeable, not very subtle at all. On one the painter(s) took some real care. The other, not so much.

*EDIT* Yes, the base is removable, which will make it much easier to paint and flock.
