Got Skills?

First Post
Skills to make life easier, skill to amuse and skills to impress. I'm sure we all have a few.

Then I got to thinking, people here are quite clever, they must know somethings that I don't.

So, here a thread, to learn new skills. No matter how simple or obvious it may be. If it's any good, post it.

1.) How to fold a t-shirt in 5 seconds. Here and here.

2.) If you need to scoop out ice cream that is frozen hard just take a cup of hot water and dip the spoon in there so you can scoop out the ice cream easily.

3.) Learn Morse Code in one minute (This one was posted some time ago in this forum, but to be thorough I thought I'd repeat it), here.

There aren't any real limitation, though the skills should be relatively easy to learn, i.e. you don't need a degree in electrical engineering to learn them.

Anything goes, from camping tips, cooking tips, general housekeeping tips. As long as it's practical and easy to learn.

  • To get wrinkles out of clothes, slap them. Just place the garment between your hands and clap. It works best when the item is wet but dry works too. This technique is widely known in the Far East but not in the west.
  • To make scotch tape easier to peel off the roll, fold the end of the tape and stick it to itself to create a small tab. The next time you use it, you'll have no trouble finding the end. This is widely known in the UK but apparently not in Japan.
  • To get shoes shiny, combine the polish with saliva, i.e. spit, as you apply it. Allow the polish to sit as long as possible before you remove it.
  • To get sperm stains out of clothes/sheets, use hydrogen peroxide ASAP.
  • To stop clothes getting wrinkled in a suitcase, place individual items in plastic bags. The clothes will be able to slide against each other, significantly reducing wrinkling.

For perfect poached eggs - no custom hardware, vinegared water, or risk of egg soup:

Spread some cling film over the mouth of a glass.
Press in to make a 'hollow' in the film.
Crack the egg into the hollow.
Twist the top to make a little 'egg-in-a-bag'.
Poach the bag.

Oh, wow, that t-shirt folding thing is awesome. Of course it comes from the land of origami, I love the Japanese.

Let's see...what can I add? Not much, but there a couple things.

1. Do you have bent up plastic minis? Boil some water and have some cold water on hand, as well. Dip the mini in the hot water, mold the now maleable plastic to taste, and dunk it in the cold, turning it back to hard plastic.

2. Best way to open a stuck jar lid, without denting the lid or scalding yourself. Take the jar, turn it upside down and bang it three times on solid surface. Breaks the seal evenly and makes the jar very easy to open.
