I knew of one guy who suddenly out of the blue, became of one those hardcore "gotta have them all" types. One day this guy decided to pick up tons of old junk from the "d20 glut" era, basically emptying the bargain bins of many FLGS. (He even picked up some of the really horrible d20 stuff). This guy didn't even play 3E/3.5E D&D at all, until recently.
