Grabbing an immobilized character

How easy is it (or not) to grab an immobilized character? Since its a strength vs. Reflex, it seems an immobilized character would have a hard time not being grabbed.

Unless immobilized just means the feet, and the person could still duck and swing their arms around.

What do you think?

Immobilizing only means they can't walk out of the square. Hypothetically they can still run around in circles in the 5' square they occupy.

This basically gets down to the level where the abstraction of the rules doesn't provide enough context to know how to answer the question. By RAW the grab wouldn't have any advantage. Immobilized is used to represent a lot of different things though. You might want to decide based on what created the effect. OTOH if someone is really completely paralyzed, they should really be helpless as well as immobilized (or at least restrained).

Immobilized is different from Helpless or Petrified. A monster of PC with the Immobilized condition can still attack and defend as normal.

As far as abstraction, it just depends on the power that causes it.

- Sticky spiderwebs allow you to move within a small area but not walk or run away.
- Terrifying fear. You're too scared to move.
- You're encircled by scorching flames.

And so on.

Basically, the way to look at immobilized is to ignore the word used to describe it and to simply look at its effects (this is true of many abilities, like "Walk" which is also used to Fly or Swim). It's also useful to think of it in contrast to other effects like "Restrained" and "Stunned."

Some of the conditions do indeed mean more or less than the word means out of the game.

It is important to keep the game meaning foremost.

Restrained is different than Immobilized

An Immobilized character can still be pulled/pushed or teleport. They do not immediately grant combat advantage.

A restrained character cannot be pulled or pushed and may only teleport. Restrained characters also grant combat advantage.

If your stuck in a sticky web or goo you could be restrained (instead of just immobilized) depending on the situation.

Grabbing an immobilized character isn't any easier than grabbing one that isn't. But since a restrained character grants combat advantage, it would be easier to grab a restrained than an immobilized.

Note when one of your party members is Immobilized you may grab your own ally to move them out of danger if you want. But moving restrained allies would take a special action determined by the GM (i.e. unlocking shackles, cutting ropes)

An immobilization effect that also hindered defenses would either be immobilized and dazed or restrained. Most conditions in 4E are very granular like this. Likewise crushing roots that deal damage as they hold you down would be restrained and ongoing X.
