Grabbing opponents weapon

I know that in real sword fighting (WMA) while uncommon it is very possible to grab your opponents sword near the hilt (especially if they have a riccaso) and control the blade just enough to get an easy hit in. Is this addressed in the d20/3.5 system beyond "Disarm- grabbing items" in the PHB?

Well basically the section on "Disarm- grabbing items" covers it. You need to be unarmed to grab a person's weapon but this results in an Attack of Opportunity (AoO for short) unless you have the Disarm Feat. It boils down to opposed checks and my group have used these in countless games for some real movie-like struggles to get the important item of the bad guys.
Personally I don't know of any other rules. Doing what you suggest wouldn't benefit hitting your target since their weapon has nothing to do with their Armour Class.

No, actually they don't. The standard Disarm rules covers this.

DISARM

If you’re attempting to disarm a melee weapon, follow the steps outlined here. If the item you are attempting to disarm isn’t a melee weapon the defender may still oppose you with an attack roll, but takes a penalty and can’t attempt to disarm you in return if your attempt fails.

yoippari - welcome to the boards!

There is no additional rule to cover this kind of action in the core rules, although products such as "Master of Arms" by Second World publications may have a feat to cover such an option.

He is probably thinking of the part of the disarm rules which say that if you disarm someone with an unarmed attack you end up in possession of the weapon (rather than it being on the floor at their feet)

Cheers

The grabbing weapon I am refering to is if you make a disarm attempt with a free hand then instead of knocking the item to the ground you keep it in your hand.

If not the sword, or other melee weapon (which is used to block attacks in WMA) then could the same be done for a shield?

I will look around for that book.

As for Disarming Shields - Thats kinda Hard to say - Since in general shield are straped to your arm there for you cant really Knock it out of somones hand.

For shields, Id consider as if they where weapons of that size < Light/Heavy > in a Locked Gauntlet - meaning a +10vs Disarm Checks.

Im not wanting to disarm a shield, I am wanting to grab the shield with a free hand and move it out of the way to allow for an easier attack.

DnD doesn't have a lot to do with real life sword fighting. The rules are very abstract and assume there are lots of little maneuvers and feints and parries and such things going on all the time. I'd say, make a normal attack role; if it hits, say you did that thing with shield-grabbing. :)

Grapple

If You’re Grappling
When you are grappling (regardless of who started the grapple), you can perform any of the following actions. Some of these actions take the place of an attack (rather than being a standard action or a move action). If your base attack bonus allows you multiple attacks, you can attempt one of these actions in place of each of your attacks, but at successively lower base attack bonuses.
...
Use Opponent’s Weapon: If your opponent is holding a light weapon, you can use it to attack him. Make an opposed grapple check (in place of an attack). If you win, make an attack roll with the weapon with a -4 penalty (doing this doesn’t require another action).
You don’t gain possession of the weapon by performing this action.

As for moving an opponent's sheild out of the way, I seem to remember an old feat in Sword and Fist called Pin Shield, it required you to be TWFing though.

Hope that helps.

There's the Grappling Block feat in Oriental Adventures that can fit what you are searching for.
