Yeah, Joshua, I mourn the loss of boxed sets as well.
The difference is that the one you have doesn't show any cities, roads, lightning rail routes, or other local features, whereas the one coming with the DM's screen is supposed to.
Yeah, I agree that maps should be function over form, that's why these don't really bother me, but form is nice too if it's not in the way. That's why I prefer Christopher West's maps -- they're always functional and beautifully rendered. Rob Lazzaretti on the other hand, used to do a lot more maps that looked cool but were relatively useless, though he's improved quite a bit over the past couple of years, and now most of his stuff is at least semi-useful. Dennis Kauth's maps are definately more function that form, though they do look better with color added, such as these ones from City of the Spider Queen.
