Great City Campaign Setting...not 4e...sucks

What's defunct?

The way I see it, WotC created a 50/50 split down the middle and has forced publishers to choose sides. Not a good approach.

I'm really looking forward to this line of products, especially since they are OGL. If they were 4E, I would care less about them.
Yep.

I would imagine that most of the people that bought that PH are planning to play it.

This does not indicate a "much larger than expected 4E market". It merely indicates sales of the 4th edition PHB. the market for 4E materials amy or may not be "much larger than expected" due to the nature of the GSL.

REmemebr, intial sales for the third edition were through the roof, too. That was followed on by a veritibale glut of 3E materials on the market. I doubt you'll see anything close to approaching the amount of material in the market for 3E in October when the GSL opens up.

In what sense did you use the word "married" if not to imply exclusivity?

In the sense that for 4E, you are married to the GSL for any published 4E materials.

So exclusive OGL users are not limited from 4e products because they can simply copy and covert products to an OGL version, but for some reason exclusive 4e users can't do the same to OGL products?

You can certainly do the same for 4E. OGL content is not limited in that anybody can produce OGL content whenever and how ever they choose and publish that content freely or for profit. The same cannot be said for GSL material.

Since I will only be supporting open gaming with my dollars from here on out, this is a good thing. The more quality publishers that stick with OGL products, the better.

I agree wiht your sentiment. Given the number of people who have stated they won't be buying OGL stuff, it's pretty obvious that my assertion of D&D having forked is true.

I did not say a "much larger than expected 4E market" as you quoted above. I said a "much larger expected 4E market". In other words, the market for 4e product is going to be much larger then the product for OGL. And when I say market, I don't mean the supply side, I mean the demand. The sales figures show this. People are going to spend much more 4e stuff then they will OGL stuff. That is why there are going to be many 3 party publishers that will sign the GSL or at least go the no copyright infringement route. There won't be any lack of product supply.

Ummmm, market refers to the willingness to buy product, not the amount of product available. More 4E PHBs were sold than expected, so the market (or rather, possible market, as we won't know the real market for at least a few months now) is larger then expected. Having fewer providers doesn't change the size of the market one bit.

I am totally lost. I have no idea what point you are trying to make here. How is a user married to the GSL, if you are free to use GSL products, use OGL products, use 4e products that don't use the GSL, or convert OGL products to 4e?

You can certainly do the same for 4E. OGL content is not limited in that anybody can produce OGL content whenever and how ever they choose and publish that content freely or for profit.

Except where it violates copyright law.

The same cannot be said for GSL material.

But you can about 4e. As long as you don't violate copyright law you can produce 4e content whenever and how ever you choose and publish that content freely or for profit.

So?

they had me right up until they said it wasn't 4e compatible

Good thing for us not moving to 4e.

But what did you 4e folks REALLY expect? There's no way most 3rd party folks are going to use the GSL for settings and flsgship items that their going to have no control over via the termination clause and other things in the GSL

Throw away adventures like goodman games is one things. Flagship type items like Pathfinder, the city setting, Tomb Of Horrors and the like? Your never going to get in 4e.

Awesomeness is mostly system independent. :)

QFT. And the Great City looks like a _VERY_ awesome product!

That it is not for 4e points out a new truth - there are going to be awesome products that are not 4e, just are there are going to be awesome products that are 4e.

Neither 4e nor OGL holds a monopoly on awesomeness. Both systems continue. Both will produce awesome and less awesome and even rotten products. The thoughtful gamer will look at an awesome product that does not support his or her system of choice and decide if the degree of awesomeness is worth the conversion effort. The Great City appears to pass this test with flying colors.

That everything is not 4e compatable is a cow that left the barn looong ago when Wotc made the 4e design decisions they did and then delayed the GSL for months upon months. The gaming public is now split asunder with both sides of the split seeing continuing product support. Welcome to realty 2008+. Long live the OGL!
