This spell appeared in Savage Species in 3.0 and gives a +6 resistance bonus to saves for 1hr/lvl. Is there an update 3.5 version of this?

Hi!

If you are referring to Superior Resistance (p. 71), then no, there seems to be no update.

Edit: AFAIK, only following spells were updated to 3.5:

Awaken Undead: see Libris Mortis
Camouflage: see Complete Divine
Embrace the Wild: see Complete Adventurer
Forestfold: see Complete Adventurer
Fox's Cunning: see Player's Handbook
Illusory Pit: see Complete Arcane
Lion's Charge: see Miniatures Handbook
Low-Light Vision: see Complete Arcane
Scent: see Complete Divine; [Edited] note that the second to fourth paragraphs were changed to: "The spell works otherwise like the Scent ability described in the Monster Manual, p. 314." [WotC 09/04]

Kind regards

Thanks for the reply. I guess if the 3.0 version stands, then this spell is way buff!

All DMs . . . . there is nothing to see here! Forget everything a move on to a more interesting thread!

BTW, if it was converted, how would you write the spell?

Compare it to protection from spells.

Superior resistance is a 5th level spell for everyone, lasts 1 hour/level, gives one creature a +6 resistance to all saves.

Protection from spells is 8th level, is only accessible to sor/wiz and as a magic domain spell, only lasts 10 minutes/level, and requires expensive material components and foci. It affects 1 creature/4 levels and gives a +8 resistance bonus to saves vs. spells and spell-like abilities only.

Seems like the only place where PfS really wins against sr is in that it affects multiple creatures. Even so, I'd say sr is substantially overpowered. I'd say it's simple to fix, however- prolly make the duration 1 minute/level, following the change in the stat boosting spells. This puts PfS firmly ahead in the power curve, despite the 'spells and spell-like abilities only' clause.

I agree with Jester, I'd reduce the duration like all buff spells had happen to them
And that's assuming you allow it in your game at all.

The fact that the spell hasn't been updated for 3.5 doesn't mean "the 3.0 version stands" as Angel suggests, but rather that, until it's updated for 3.5, the spell doesn't exist in 3.5.

Any official quote about that?

Unless I'm mistaken, everything's fine until they update it. It's a revision, not a new edition, so the "old" stuff is fine.

I think it has been said, that old stuff could be used, if there was no update, but especially with the spells there has been such extensive modifications in the transition, that I would be generally wary about using 3.0 spells in a 3.5 game.

Superior Resistance is a very powerful spell for sure. A duration of 1 min./level would make it useless, tho. 10 min./level would be ok, I think, and/or maybe a +1/three levels (max +5) instead of the flat +6.

The +5 max would also mean that the spell cannot be better than the corresponding magic item.
