Greater True Strike

So, suppose I modify the spell so that it does what it does, but only applies to actual weapons (and not to any spells).

I would allow spells and weapons... and grapple attempts and anything else that is considered "an attack".

Is it now an acceptable 2nd level spell?

I think so.

For one thing, it further devalues Quicken Spell.
What do you mean... "further devalues"?

Quicken Spell was highly improved in 3.5, since Haste doesn't allow an extra spell anymore.

The only thing that "devalues" Quicken is the stupid XPH with Schism. :p

Actually, Dave, my problem was never with your spell, but with JimAde's suggestion that it be available as a 3rd-level spell with a free action casting time, which I think is too powerful. I think yours is fine, even if it can apply to ray spells and weapons. The fact that you have to waste an action casting it, and that it elapses after 1 round/level, does enough to balance it IMHO.
It seemed OK to me, but I haven't run that much D&D/d20. I'll have to take the word of more experienced DMs here. I was just looking for a cleaner mechanic rather than having to worry about whether you were using a weapon or casting a Ray spell.

Because as someone else stated, True Strike is one of the most, if not the most, commonly Quickened spells. If you create a spell that does the same thing at a lower spell slot, combined with Quicken's already high cost, it becomes much less attractive.

Okay, let's try another one. Feel free to attack why this shouldn't be 3rd level.

:)

Dave

Ally's True Strike, Greater
Divination
Level: Sor/Wiz 3
Components: V, F
Casting Time: 1 standard action
Range: Touch
Duration: See text
The ally you touch gains temporary, intuitive insight into the very near future during her next attack. Her next single attack roll (which can be made any time after this round, but before a period of one round per your caster level) gains a +20 insight bonus. Additionally, she is not affected by the miss chance that applies to attackers trying to strike a concealed target. Between the casting of this spell and taking the attack, she can only take move actions.
Focus: A small wooden replica of an archery target.

I think it is fine as a third level however I wouldn't call it Greater Ally's True Strike since there would need to be a "Lesser" and a "Normal" version. I would snip Greater off the name and call it a day. Or, add Lesser to it, then make a 4th level version which is good for a few rounds. You'd need a Greater to complete the "series". Maybe the Greater allows you to use it on multiple allies? I as a DM wouldn't be too fired up on having my entire party come at my BBEG with +20 to their attack rolls. Maybe a better alternative is all attacks in a round (including AoOs) are at +20, but only for 1 PC.

The only problem with this spell is that it can be made into potions, but otherwise, I think it's fine.
