The main focus is to maximise DPR
Assume that this is Fighter dipping into Warlock for the initial scenario
With 2 Characters of the same level, picking feats/talents/stats as they go along to maximise DPR, which comes out on top? a Polearm user or a Greatsword user?
For the second scenario, abandon the fixed parameters of class and simply compare a greatsword vs polearm user with whichever class combination you can find that maximises the DPR
