Green Lantern #180: The Penultimate Issue (SPOILERS)

Bring on the controversy.

Ron Marz, a writer who was mercilessly destroyed by fans of former GL Hal Jordan has returned for the final 6 issue arc of the current Green Lantern series starring Kyle Rayner as GL. We already know that after this series ends, there will be a Green Lantern: Rebirth mini-series followed by a new Green Lantern series starring Hal Jordan.

Marz wasnt only destroyed for the way he wrote Hal out of the book, but for Kyle's first story also, where Major Force cut up Kyle's then girlfriend and stuffed her in the fridge for Kyle to find. "Sickening" some fans said, or "Misogyny" said others. Much like the current Identity Crisis series, some people obviously can't tell the difference between the villian of the book and the writer's own mindset.

So with the return of Marz, Kyle returns to Earth from a way-too-long journey into outer space. Gets dumped by his gf, feels replaced by the Justice League, and has Fatality and Major Force once again gunning for him.
So he goes home to his mom to talk about how much his life sucks, which of course means her days are numbered too.

He leaves to visit the graves of his dead-gf Alex, and his other dead-ex-gf Donna Troy (aka Troia aka Wonder Girl 1) and gives a great line to Donna's tombstone. "We ended so suddenly, it almost seemed like we were forced apart" This is a direct slap in the face to John Byrne who forced editorial to give him control of Donna when he was writing Wonder Woman and just stole her out of Ron's GL run, barely giving them time to explain it. Way to go Ron!

Kyle returns home to find his mom's glasses crushed and something sticking out of the fridge. He immediately assumes the worst and has a look of absolute horror on his face. He opens the door and finds...food. Whew.
Major Force wanders in and says he's disappointed Kyle thinks that Force would repeat himself. And If the fridge upset him, he better not look in the stove...

Major Force chopped up Kyle's mom and put her in the stove.
Beautiful.
I applaud Marz for not backing down from his critics and having the courage to do this AGAIN.

Kyle is crazy with rage, takes it to Major Force hard and on the last page is telling Force to stand up or die on his knees.

I HOPE Kyle kills him and doesn't become an accessory to more future deaths like Batman and Superman. It will also open many more future storylines between Kyle and the league, Kyle and Hal, and Kyle and whatever comes out of Identity Crisis.

Kudos to Mr. Marz for a job well done so far.

Interesting author. I believe he is the reason I quit buying comics around 10 years ago. Hope you like him.

I for one am glad they are bringing back the GL Corps & Hal. Zero Hour & the Parallax deal was a travesty and I never got into this new GL.

Side Note:

Bring Back Kilowog as a GL!!!!!!

I'm starting the society for the return of Kilowog to the GLC, I'll always hold it against the Poozers who wrote the arc that had the Battery destroyed and most of the GL's dead or ringless.

A long time ago, after Rayner was stablished as GL, Ron Marz mentioned that Major Force didn't "cut up" Alex and stuff her in the fridge. He just killed her and stuffed her in the fridge. And Darryl Banks (penciller) showed next to nothing of Alex's body (thankfully). Fan cooked up horrible images of what Major Force did, far worse than what Marz had originally written.

I dunno... This feels like Emerald Twilight all over again.

Just hope Hal gets better treatment on his second go.

Donna Troy's dead? When did that happen? Last I heard of her, Byrne made her the magical twin of Wonder Woman (one of the many terrible ideas from his WW run).

As to the new story, frankly, I never liked Marz. It's not just for his butchering of Green Lantern, but I dropped Silver Surfer years ago when he took over. I can't recall anything specific, but I just remember giving up on the writing. He also wrote that Marvel VS DC mini-series, but that whole thing was a mess, so I'm not sure how much was his fault.

As a side note, Marz admited in an interview that he wrote the corruption and death of GL issues while at a rock concert. Explains the quality to a certain extent right there.

Marz's name is one of my warning signs when buying comics (along with Liefeld and, sadly now, John Byrne).

Oh well, hopefully, he'll kill off Kyle and not be allowed to write the new Hal Jordan issues.

Troia was killed in combat with a rogue Superman android (heat beam to the chest); her death triggered the end of both the Titans and Young Justice. This happened in The Titans/Young Justice: Graduation Day #3. However, it should be noted that she was seen later, awakening on a desolate world, next to a shield and sword, and heeded a cry to battle; this was in all likelihood her spirit in some afterlife realm.

Kilowog was already brought back from the dead in the "Last Will and Testament of Hal Jordan" hardcover graphic novel, and then returned to his original body sometime in the last 2 years in the regular series.
I'm sure he will be on hand for the GL:Rebirth mini-series, and if the Corps is reformed, he'll be first in line for a ring after the Earthlings.

Buzzard, you dropped comics because of ONE writer? do you drop all books because of one bad author? all movies because of one stinker? all tv because of one weak show? why are you on the internet? theres at least one bad website. and hey, i wouldnt talk to people either. i know at least one $%$%

And as for Emerald Twilight...yup, it does feel like that all over again, and its supposed to. But i still think Emerald Twilight made perfect sense and was a great story.

And I do believe that its Geoff Johns (aka the best thing going today) writing the GL:Rebirth mini and John Byrne writing the Hal ongoing (cuz hes's stuck in the past, so it makes sense to give him this book and ensure it will suck)

Emerald Dawn = good!

Emerald Twilight = bad!

Hal had faced much more tragedy in his life than Coast City being blown up (Carol Ferris, the love of his life, was alive; Tom Kalmaku, his best friend, was alive; Hal's brothers didn't live in Coast City). In the past he had to cope with being framed for the death of the Tattoed Man, coping with his girlfriend being the Star Sapphire, quitting the Corps and then having to wield a Yellow ring to save the universe during Crisis, watching his best friend in the Corps dying in his arms (Tomar-Re), being injected with heroine while wearing his Power Ring (omnipotence + drug-induced halucinations = bad!)...

Coast City going kaboom? Not enough to break down the original Man Without Fear (much less making him do what he did to Kilowog and other fellow GLs).

Major Force has come back from the dead more times than Jean Grey. Killing him again will have no more dramatic impact than just yelling at him for a while.
