Just for the record, Ron Marz is not really to blame for what happened to
Hal back in Emerald Twilight. That was strictly editorial. He basically got a
story treatment pushed into his hands, which Ron Marz disliked very much
and told to script it out.
His original treatment for the story had Hal slowly becoming disillusioned of
the GL Corps over a long period of time, confronting the Guardians over that
they killed his dad to engineer him as GL material and saving the Corps from
a bad guy by draining the Oan Battery. He then quit the Corps and becomes
the cosmic hero Protector.
He had already written one script (which can be found online) when editorial
came to the conclusion that it needed more 'punch' and decided do what was
done as they needed a 'shocking' villain for the planned Zero Hour event.
The reason Hal Jordan is coming back now was that three years ago the last
of the GL fiasco editorial team quit at DC. It's DC editorial politics that held
Hal Jordan in Spectre limbo and the Green Lantern Corps from being reestablished.
As soon as the last editor involved quit we got Joe Kelly's Last Will & Testament
of Hal Jordan which brought back Kilowag and Oa and the Winick's Ion GL arc
which reignited the central battery and brought back the Guardians. We have
familiar ex-Green Lanterns showing up everywhere around the DCU. Jade gets
her powers back. John Stewart gets a ring (although the JL cartoons probably
has more to do with that) and Alan Scott drops that silly Sentinel identity for
the name of Green Lantern.
Those silly 90s editors.
