[Green Lantern] What'd I Miss? - GL Questions...

I'm a big Hal Jordan fan. When The Powers That Be at DC gave good ol' Hal the shaft I stopped reading Green Lantern (and comics in general). Now that Hal's coming back I picked up some TPBs and GL back issues to get reaquainted with the GL universe - and now I'm very confused. I need strong lantern-fu to help clear some things up (a lot can happen in 125+ issues... ;))

  • I thought Ganthet was the last Guardian. How'd they get Guardian children? Has Ganthet been a dirty little boy?
  • John Stewart and Alan Scott can manifest power without a ring. Huh?
  • Jade is Alan Scott's daughter, but she looks like She-Hulk. Huh? Again.
  • Jade was Green Lantern for a time. I thought Kyle Rayner had the last ring. Did she use Kyle's?

I haven't read GL in a LONG time, but a couple of these I can field...

Alan Scott: I don't know about John Stewart, but Alan Scott's ring was powered by the Starheart (the magic in the universe that the Guardians contains and 'banished' or somesuch). At some point there was a big confrontation and it was revealed that after so many years of contact with the Starheart's power and all that, he could manifest it all by hisself. Yay Alan.
Jade: Jade's always been green. Although she did at one point or another use her power to make herself appear not green, as I've read she stopped that a while back.

1. No, Ganthet's been keeping it in his pants. Kyle got access to a tremendous amount of power for a short time. He briefly changed his name to Ion and he was, for all practical purposes, a god. He eventually realized how the power was affecting him and 'burned it off' by ressurecting the Guardians as children (and made them two sexes again) and recreating the Central Power Battery.

2. Alan's been able to do that for awhile now. John did that briefly due to Kyle granting him some residual energy (Kyle found he can imbue people with Ring energy for a short time - basically until they lose concentration).

3. Jade's always been green. Even back in her Infinity Inc days she was green. She had her own source of power for awhile, lost it, got it back again, then I think lost it again. When Kyle was Ion, he changed her so she had her own power again. But she still has/had access to a Ring.

4. For a time, Jade had access to Hal Jordan's original ring - Kyle met and fought with Hal against Hal's own future self. There's a collection of that arc and no-way am I trying to replicate all the twists and turns here. :) But the upshot of it all was that Kyle had a second ring, which was a copy of Hal's ring - which can make copies of itself, just as Kyle can make copies of the Battery. He was going to use this ability to recreate the Corps at one time, but found that he didn't have the ability to really judge people as well as the Guardians did. Kyle's ring can do a number of things Hal's could not, but copying itself is not one of those abilities.

Now, what has happened to that ring since Jade got her powers back? I have no idea; I think she simply kept it, since it was part of Kyle's original proposal to her. (Yeah, she rejected him but kept the Ring :) ).

Ah. I was wondering how they were gonna pull that off.

Yeah... Emerald Knights. Good story. Thanks for the responses. I'm gonna pick up the "Ion" arc this week - it seems some of my questions will be answered there.

One last thing - why is John Stewart in a wheelchair?

Thanks again.

They're "two sexes again"? What happened to the Zamorans, the tall, human-looking women who were supposed to be the female gender of the Guardians? Last I heard of them, they were on Oa with the Guardians again. Of course, that was before the whole "Hal Goes Crazy And Kills The Guardians" story. I don't recall them ever being killed off.

So, what do the female Guardians look like? Are they blue or human?

Hal Jordan's coming back? When's that happening? He's the Spectre in a current JSA storyline. Guess I may be an issue or two behind.

Does he have the white tufts of hair on the side of his head still? Ron Marz used to theorize that was the biggest mistake ever made with the character, as it made Hal seem like "your dad's hero, not yours".

He was in a wheelchair. He got better. I forget exactly how he became paralysed in the first place, but Kyle (again when he had the power of Ion) fixed the physical side of the problem. There was no physical reason he should not be walking. There was rabbit-out-of-a-hat psychological BS about how his sister died in a car accident while he was the driver (the accident was not his fault) and his guilt and annnngst over that combined with the guilt he still felt (and well he should, since it was all his fault) over letting an entire planet die kept him from walking. Whatever. He's past all that now.

I'm uncertain what happened with the Zamorans. The Guardians, except for Ganthet and one of the females, are all children. They're all still blue with white hair.

Yep; Hal (dammit) is back as of.. #186, I think. At which point they'll start a new series at #1. Something to do with the Identity Crisis storyline. How he shuffs off being The Spectre.. I have no idea, but all in all he's been a pretty terrible spirit of divine wrath. I think it just gets taken from him. Bah. I wanted Terry to get the dang ring, next :)

Well, according to Geoff Johns (the writer behind Hal's return) Kyle
won't be going anywhere. He even stopped being *the one and only*
Green Lantern some time ago.
