"Greyhawk" announced

First Post
Apparently, a new D&D 3E computer game, featuring turn-based combat is in the works from Troika games.

Gamespot has an interview up, and I think this is the first time I remember that the designer of a CRPG sounds like he knows what he's talking about when it comes to the PnP version.

Hmm, set in Greyhawk? That would be a first, I think.

Forgotten Realms, Dragonlance, Dark Sun, Birthright, Ravenloft, Planescape, Mystara, Spelljammer, and even the Hollow World had PC/video games set in them. But not Greyhawk, for some reason.

Yes, it seems... well I'm skeptic. Offhand, I think there were a few greyhawk games a LONG time ago, but I can't remember the name, which gives me basically 0 credibility ;)

"Greyhawk

Gamespy Link

Sounds promising but then they always do don't they :D

And an intended release date of June 2003 6 months woohoo! Although its a safe bet there will be slippage on that date.

Well, the people making it have a fairly good track record - Fallout, which was great, and Arcanum, which was definitely above average but flawed in many ways...

I like the fact that they're going turn-based, I also take some hope from the part where he says they don't change anything from the 3E rules unless they absolutely have to, and that he seems to be a rpg player himself. We'll see.

And I really ought to have posted this in general discussion, every time you're good and post things to the "appropriate" forums you're rewarded with complete obscurity... ;)

Temple of Elemental Evil, huh? Pretty cool. Also in that interview, apparently if it does well, they might do G1-3 Against the Giants, next.

I also like the turn based combat.

NWN is fun, but when I have a henchman, they always beat up a guy before I get a chance to click on the guy. I could never handle the Balder's Gate style games - too fast for me - I'm not quick with a mouse.

The Baldur's Gate games are turn based for all intents and purposes, since you can pause as much as you want and issue orders... You can even set up the game to pause every turn automatically.

Yeah but queuing up a bunch of commands doesn't work well with 3e combat. I would much rather be able to take the time to make the decisions I want when my turn in the initiative occurs like the game allows. Real time would make that frantic and pausing is just a half-assed attempt to get things under control.

Don't get me wrong, I'd also prefer the combat to be done as true to the 3E mechanics as possible, including real turn-based movement.

But a game like that, to work well, would have to depart from the massive amounts of combat you usually find in a CRPG and emphasize quality over quantity - can you imagine figthing 20 orcs in turn-based mode and waiting for the to do their moves, one at a time?
