Greyhawk by another publisher?

Not to derail the thread but can you tell me if the "Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting" be evolved in each of the future releases? It was not clear to me if this setting ended after the 6th installment/gazetteer and a new setting began. I assume it will keep going but wanted to check

Also any official word yet on when/if you guys will switch to 4e with the Pathfinder?

If you can’t answer ether of those here I understand. I’ll be watching paizo.com too.

The Pathfinder Adventure Paths will all be set on Golarion, Paizo's campaign world that the Pathfinder Chronicles are set in, although each path (as well as each GameMastery Module) could/will be set in different regions/areas of that world.

As for 4E, I think Mike McArtor said on paizo.com messageboards that the first two paths for sure will be 3.5E. After that, no decision has been made.

There are only two companies who I'd trust enough to buy Greyhawk goodies from sight unseen:

Paizo, under Erik's iron fist.

or Troll Lord, under Gary's fatherly gaze.

From anyone else, even WotC themselves, I'll wait for the reviews.

For me personally, no, I wouldn't buy it. But being a Dragonlance fan, I know how much a "dead world" means to people. So if it would make some Greyhawk fans happy, then sure.

You know that Dragonlance is still actively supported, right?

I wouldn't be surprised (though I know absolutely nothing on this score) to see an official Wizards of the Coast Greyhawk hardcover somewhere down the road, though, with tons of support on D&D Insider. I have a feeling they may be taking that route with a lot of their campaign settings.

This is particularly annoying as it seems like a cold buisness decision. I think it would be to the benefit of the fans if the setting would be developed by you. And I think Wizards knows that, and knows it will actually make it money from such a book, but witholds because it figures that will make more money by publishing a worse in-house setting book. I'm generally a Wizards fan, but in this case I think corporate greed is undermining the game.

If I were WotC, I would hire Paizo to do the setting under close cooperation with me. That way Erik gets to lead the design, invests a lot of effort (frankly, more than he should, buisness-wise, I suspect) into it, the work still benefits from my in-house R&D and professional savvy, and I still produce loads of DI material for it to attract the fans to my online site and revenue channels.

We've raised the issue every year since Paizo started, including a couple of months ago, and it's always been a non-starter. The official word from Scott Rouse is that Wizards of the Coast is not currently interested in licensing any of its campaign settings to third-party companies.

So for the time being, we're focusing on the Pathfinder Chronicles campaign setting, which gets a "rules-lite" 64-page gazetteer in January.

Thanks for that Erik. I'd love to see Greyhawk handed over to Paizo, as a worthy home, but as you say, it's probably unlikely to happen.

Unfortuantely I can only assume it's the same kind of business reasoning that lead to the recall of the magazine licenses.

At the end of the day, WotC is a business, and needs to be primarily concerned about what is good for their bank balance, and I don't begrudge them that. But IMHO, there is a middle road to make a profit and occasionally make a move that while not neccessarily a huge money-spinner, shows that they do care about and value their fans.

Good PR can be as valuable as any coin at times.

My concern for Greyhawk is almost nil, however I respect the fact that others enjoy it and it did give me one real bit of fun (Ruins of Castle Greyhawk and random monster generator anyone?) that I'll always remember fondly. So I hope it goes to a good home (I personally think Ravenloft went to the best people for the job) Seems to me Erik Mona or Paizo would be fitting choices to echoe everyone else here.
