GSL is up

Exactly. I started running KotS yesterday, and having all the information I needed on those two pages, was extremely useful for me.

I agree, i really like the KotS layout. In comparison, i HATE the way Dawn of Defiance is laid out, with all the combat encounter details in the second half of the book. Great adventure though, not slamming that, just the way it's organized.

Technically, couldn't you use the monster-levelling thing twice and level the monster up once and then down once and technically be legally able to include the new 'modified' monster that happens to be the same as the original one?

I mean it's not what they intend obviously but it seems to be true.

You're thinking in rules lawyer terms, not law lawyer terms.

-O

I didn't even see the levelling process* as in the SRD, so doing something you can't do twice to make something you can't do at all better? Not so much.

* Specifically, the DM's toolbox option to do so.

So that is the end of products like DM Genie for 4e, which really are what made 3e playable for me anyway. I certainly don't trust Wizards to produce a computer utility of equal quality and utility, and I certainly am not going to pay monthly to lease it anyway.

Boooo, WOTC.

Wow. Some of this stuff is completely asinine. You cannot list the stat block of a monster from the MM in a module you write. But you CAN do stat blocks for your own original monsters.

So for a Cyclops Impaler, all you can say is that it is in the Monster Manual, and you can reference the fact he has a spear. But if you have BERNIE the Cyclops Impaler, you have just made an original monster and can give his full statblock [which will be exactly the same as the one from the MM, maybe with -1 HP or something. Lame.

Trying to stop publishers from putting statblocks in their modules? Can we say petty? Part of the reason for buying a module is the convenience of not having to flip through a bunch of books all the time-- the convenience of having all the info you need at the tips of your fingers.

It's been like this for some time. Maybe not forced, but a company would be wasteful if it reprinted something everyone supposed to have already. Ever seen a Dungeon adventure? They work exactly like that.

I find it kind of strange that a few of the monsters that appear on the list are not actually concepts or names that are unique to D&D...
Well, at least cambions and Orcus. Those are two names that they cannot trademark.

Well, given that WotC does plan to produce utilities like that, it's not too surprising that they don't want to let others do the same.

Yeah, made 3e playable. I used DM's Familiar, and wouldn't DM 3e without it. 4e, I'm not sure it's as necessary.
