Guess who got Warhammer Fantasy Role-Play for Christmas!

This guy!

I found an original, GW-produced-in'85 copy of the rules (in hardback, yet) and ordered it for myself with Mrs. Claus' blessing (I'd told her I wanted a copy and she asked me to find it and order it and she'd wrap it for me, but alas it won't be here until Thursday).

Anyway that rigmarole aside, I got the Thursday night d20.CHAMPIONS/& etc. group to agree to at least a one-off. Having a copy of the rules here in front of me (Hogshead 1e printing) I'm thinking I'll just use the included adventure THE OLDENHALLER CONTRACT.

Anyone know of any particular "Gotchas" about it?

Hmm, I have the 1E superthick paperback from Hogshead.

I hear 1E dwarves can get obnoxiously tough pretty easily, though I'd assume that take much longer than a one off session.

IIRC the game uses the concept of 'groups' to determine area effects. A fireball will either hit a lone target or all the targets standing in a group formation.

Ballistics Skill is lower than Weapon skill intentionally. If you fire at a 'group', you double your Ballistics Skill and then randomly determine who in that group was hit.

Thanks for the info. Assuming I get the group interested enough, what are the best published adventures available?

Sorry. Got no idea on which published adventures are "good", though I hear there are many a good fan made adventures out there.

Oh, one more thing, though the the 1E fluff seems to indicate magic items are rare, If i hear correctly they are kinda common as treasure in published scenarios.

THE ENEMY WITHIN seems to get a lot of good press. I'll have to secure a copy.

FAKE EDIT: Ouch, that's a pricey set of modules...! Maybe I'll check out the fan made ones first. Also, I will report back on the play-test. Hopefully I can convince the guys to make it our regular Thurs. game (they already have passed on AD&D).

Many of what are considered "good" adventurers really have to have a good GM to run them. Like One Night At The Four Feathers, a short adventure in Plundered Vaults.

Others are good because of Nostalgia. Enemy Within has some brilliant parts but it has a lot of potential of running straight off the rails.

We've really been enjoying the WFRP theme. I liked it so much that I set my D&D game there (house rules here: Jay H's Maptool Stuff)

1E had a lot more of the foot-off-the-gas-feeling, where as in 2E, it's a lot more reserved and other than magic (which traditionally plays a miniscule part of most games), feels an awful lot like D&D 3E. Talents= feats, skills are skills. % instead of d20 (do the math). That's a GOOD thing. The system will be easy to run and players can get into the FEEL of the game world instead of doping about worrying on rules.

Oldenhaller has been updated to 2E btw, and there may be some Erratta in there. Check on the Fantasy Flight Games forums for more details.

Isn't that the first part of Enemy Within?

The Enemy Within campaign is actually the only I know, but it is definitely very good (we played that one converted to D&D 3E). :)
