Guns, D&D, and DDM

What's your stance on Guns in D&D and DDM?

I wouldn't like it, but I wouldn't care if they made a DDM with a gun. I just wouldn't use it.

Hear hear!

Damn, I've been over at the Wizards boards too much. There, such a statement is an extraordinary feat of broad-mindedness that I forgot that this should be normal for non-lovers of whatever type of mini we're talking about.

It's how I treat warforged. I don't play Eberron, and personally the warforged sound like something that should belong to Star Wars more than D&D, but I know that not everything shares my opinion. And the game is for everyone. It's not K'YDDM. So there's a number of minis I probably won't ever use in D&D (I hardly play the skirmish game, mainly becuase I have noone to play with - though that might change now), but I don't begrudge the Warforged-fans their figures.

The only thing I don't like is when some figures get too numerous, but that doesn't happen too often. As long as I get 55 or more useful figures out of a set, I'm content.

I like guns. Always have. As long as the campaign world allows.
Though I think they need to make them a little deadlier, they need to bypass Armor and Shield Bonus' to Armor or defense. The reason I say this is that I saw this History channel program where they said that Firearms where one of the reasons metal Armor went out of style for protection. Cant remember the shows name so dont ask.

Crossbows also had armour-piercing capability. That's why they were so unpopular with the beknighted nobility: Here you were, a lord and knight with your extensive sword training and your expensive armour and big horse, and a mere peasant could knock you off your horse and out of life without too much training.

I don't want them personally. I didn't used to care if they made them or didn't.

After filling up my ignore list on Wizards with the pro-D&D gun zealots, I am now voting to never have them in the game.

First off let me saw IRL I LOVE guns. I teach firearm safety take as many training classes as I can and spend way toomuch money on ammo and guns.

That being said I HATE the idea of firearms in D&D. DOn't care if they are muskets or glocks.

First of all game designers can't even get out an encylopedia and record the weight of swords and armor correctly. And trying to make the combat system realistic is a nightmare.

I want to be able to suspend my disbelief and I know way too much about firearms and the designers will CERTANLY get things wrong. Firearms are rather complex in how things go together. What bullet type, powder type rifled barrel or smooth bore etc etc etc. Lots of combinations. If they can not be bothered to find out that a long sword will weigh 2-3 pounds tops or a great sword 3-4 I doubt they will handle firearms correctly. If you don't have a rifled barrel accuracy is seriously going to blow. This is one of the reasons they had mass fire tactics.

Plus when I play D&D I want to play sword and sorcery. I don't want to play with firearms in game. There are plenty of other settings for that and if I want to play that then I will play in one of those games. Let D&D stay sword and sorcery and have other games for firearms.

I don't mind gunpowder pistols nor do I hate them. I think it is silly that in a fantasy world that there would be a limit on what would be discovered. Someone would discover electricity because they didn't want to learn magic for example. I like Dragonstar for that reason. Then again in a realm where the laws of Newton mix with the laws of Merlin you have conflicts. In my world I explain that you will not find cannons really because a low level wizard or someone with UMD and a wand with a fire spell will RUIN your day. Same with ships....one spark and BOOM!

In my world Gnomes invented the most efficent method versions of pistols. Kobold and Dwarves love a good explosion for mining. They are nice in combat for the sound but a good axe (or pick for a kobold) is more satisfying. Goblins love to have one to intimidate those bigger then them since most have a short man's complex. The disciplined Hobgoblins are actually pretty good formation rifleman.

Firearms are all in all they are not in vogue, magic is still the best thing since gunpowder weapons are VERY expensive to buy and maintain. Plus wands don't worry about being rained on and not working. I say eventually things discovered in the real world will be invented in my fantasy world but not for a long time since magic is available and more people put stock into that rather then science.

For my FR campaign, there are no guns.

For my new Ptolus game ... limited guns

For my Iron Kingdoms game ... lots o guns, and a few grenades, and the odd cannon

So it all depends on the campaign. Guns bring a patricular flavor whenever they are included in a setting. So when it fits ... I use them. No problems.
