D&D (2024) Gunslinger Class (from Valda's Spire of Secrets) on DnD Beyond!

You can find the class on Mage Hand Press web site along with the new firearm rules and a few subclasses. While I love renaissance level guns in my DND I just don't think. They need a whole class, also the firearm rules make it feel like you are far better off just using crossbows or the core firearm rules and not the new ones they add.
D&D at this point encompasses a whole range of settings. I can definitely see using this in the right game. Heck, there were at least one or two gunslingers around in Gygax's Greyhawk, as shown in EX 2: The Land Beyond the Magic Mirror.

Plus the Red Steel expansion to Mystara covering the Savage Coast region gave us smokepowder and guns, though limited to that region by magical curse to keep the guns from spreading to the rest of the planet.

Which is a pretty good way to contain it. If not a curse, one could do the equivalent of wild magic zones where advanced technology works instead, maybe showing they're the sites of previous incursions from other planes, etc.

I just prefer using guns as a Ranger, Fighter, Rogue, Artificer rather than have a dedicated class for them.
 

the capstone is sick--Head shot lets you auto-kill an enemy on a crit if they have less than 100 hp (otherwise, extra 10d10).

The autokill if less than 100 hp is reasonable at level 20. Consider the spell Power Word Kill, or at a lower tier Harm.

Probably player characters should have some opportunity to avoid being auto-killed, but these kinds of effects happen at the highest tier.

This capstone only happens on crit, but might happen several times.
 

For the weapon itself.

The main benefit of a gun is its ease of bypassing armor. Otherwise, there little difference between a sword thru the abdomen and a bullet thru the abdomen. Both occur when reaching zero hit points, where the zero means a potentially fatal wound.

One way to represent it is, the gun imposes a Reflex save, for full or no damage. Then agile light armor with high Dex is difficult to damage, while low-Dex heavy armor is an easier target.

Either way, the idea of moderate d8 damage being more if a crit, makes sense.
 



Does it work just fine with Renaissance only weapons? I have a player interested in playing a gunslinger in Eberron (see the thread here) and I don't intend to make firearms a big part of the setting.
I can't speak as to what's in the D&D beyond, but in Valda's SoS, they had a sidebar explaining how to use the class with different ages of weapons, or "magic firearms" to be more of a wandslinger.
