GURPS at 50%

I had a Tai Chi practioner friend, heavy into Kung Fu, light into roleplaying.

Stated that Gurps Martial Arts (or whatever the title is) was more accurate and definitive than most books he'd read on the subject.

For half off I'd pick up as manyt as I could. At the very least they make good trade fodder if after you read them you think it would be of no use to you. The historical ones are my favorite as they are just well done and impressive, but relaly the title of the book serves as a great way to figure out if you'll like it.

Anyway, after that longish preamble, are there any other particularly good GURPS supplements I should try to get while they are so cheap?

I can't offhand think of any GURPS supplement that isn't at least decent. The approach I'd recommend is to figure out what sort of genres you're interested in, and check if your store has the books for 'em (the odds are fairly high that GURPS has at least one supplement for any genre you're likely to think of).

Steve Jackson Games has a webpage listing all the GURPS books they've published, you might try browsing through there for inspiration. It's unlikely your local store has all of them - many have been out of print for years - but you should be able to find some you like.

I may shock people here by recommending a few GURPS books, given my dim view of the local GURPS players, but...
GURPS Discworld. Paul Kidby's illustrations alone are worth the purchase!
GURPS Goblins. I don't know if it is still in print, but what a wonderfully cynical setting it was. Goblins in Edwardian England.
GURPS Traveller. Back to the original Traveller Universe, and it even has the classic cover quote - Mayday, Mayday, this is free trader Beowulf, calling anybody...

It is mostly the local players that I cannot abide, rather than the game itself.

This Local Gaming Store doesn't have an online store do they?

Ditto to all above, especially if you are playing D20 Modern. Biotech, Techomancer, Atomic Horror, and Warehouse 23 are all good for new settings.

I dislike GURPS, but I played a LOT of it in the 1990's because my game group did some playtesting for SJG.

Though I dislike the system, they do tend to do their research when making a supplement. As a result, I DID buy some GURPS: Traveller stuff (because I like Traveller and it was out of print at the time) and their Martial Arts stuff.

If nothing else, I figured I could extrapolate from the MA supp into other systems- there's some nice background info in that book.

Were I you, I'd buy only stuff dealing with settings/genres you enjoy but can't find sourcebooks for in your favorite systems.

But as for Firearms, etc- there's no shortage of good weapons supplements.

Throw in another voice for the awesomeness of GURPS supplements. I own probably about adozen, and I played GURPS once. Six years ago.

Biotech, Magic, Grimoire, Robots, High Tech, Ultra Tech, Fantasy Bestiary, Martial Arts,

...

I can't remember the rest right now. But yeah. All are good. Take off every zig.
