GURPS Halo RPG?!!

Y'know, this has to be one of the dumbest things I've ever heard of. A Halo RPG......*SIGH* The game was mediocre at the best, the only selling point being it's graphics. Why in the world would you want to make an RPG out of it??

I haven't played Halo, but in all honesty I do wonder "what's the big deal?"

What kind of unique things does Halo present that other similar looking sci-fi (eg. Starship troopers, space above and beyond, etc.) scenarios don't offer?

Again, not a challenge, just wondering.

As far as making HALO into an RPG I agree it has a greater chance of sucking than of not, but man, when you say the game is mediocre I can only assume you played it once, got destroyed, and refused to play anymore. Do a search online for the HALO warthog quicktime video and you'll see what the appeal of the game is...

There are no other fps games with real phsyics.

I, for one, love the game. It's the best FPS I've played, but the thing that made it truely great was that it combined great gameplay with a compelling universe.

I've read Fall of Reach (a Halo novel set before the game) and it made me love the "setting" even more. The state of humanity and their being thrust into an alien holy war created a unique atmosphere. The Covenent's hierarchy, mindset, and unique technology coupled with the mysterious nature of the war will open up a lot of fun roleplaying avenues.

This is definitely the RPG product I'm most anticipating this year! (I'll have to dust off my old GURPS manual:))

I hate when people assume that just because I have a low opinion of a game that I only played it once and sucked at it.

I actually have the game, and finished it on all difficulties. The game has a decent interface and awesome graphics, but that's the extent of it's pros. The gameplay is painfully repetitive, enemy tactics are extremely predictable, and extremely unoriginal. After beating the game I realized this. Halo is nothing more than a Starcraft ripoff where you're a cyborg grunt, the protoss are evil, and the zerg have no overmind.

As for the real physics, ever heard of Unreal Tournament 2003?;)

But all of the gameplay and graphics are irrelevant when considering whether it will make a good RPG. Like I said, Halo is nothing more than a Starcraft ripoff where you're a cyborg grunt, the protoss are evil, and the zerg have no overmind. Storyline sucks, and whatever redeeming qualities there are in graphics, etc. ARE NOT GOING TO BE TRANSFERRED TO AN RPG!

This is going to be SO horrible...only idiots and fanboys will buy this, or people who just want some more concept art for whatever reason.

I've never played Halo (except a brief deathmatch at a con, which was surprisingly playable considering I've never used a controller for an FPS before). I've never even played Marathon (the Mac-based Doom contemporary by Bungie). But my friend has, and from what he's told me the appeal isn't just the running around with guns, it's the alien culture.

Now, I don't know much about the Covenant. Heck, I can't even remember what the difference between a phfor and a svit is. (Did I put enough 'phf' in there?) But I do know that Marathon actually managed to have a plot beyond 'shoot aliens', complete with kidnapping, rampant AIs conspiring against one another and against million-year-old alien empires, and some serious ambiguity about the identity of the protagonist (Mjolnir-class cyborg, anyone? I'm told you don't figure it out until, like, three games into the series).

I expect that Bungie managed to put something decent together for Halo's Covenant. Thus, you could well have a great resource for an alien menace to be plugged into any setting with a GURPS book.

Then again, I know absolutely nothing about any of this, so why am I even bothering?

Usually I'd be in firm opposition to an RPG like this but ...this is Halo. Halo is the only game that I've beaten more times than I can count.... a game that never gets old. It launched with the Xbox and I'm STILL playing it regularly. The Singleplayer and Multiplayer are both great and the story, while nothing that will inspire awe, is fairly good. I believe there are (or soon will be) two books out for the game and a sequel is in the works so quite a bit of background material is present....and...I've never read a bad GURPS book so I'm not going to write it off quite yet.

*shrug* You are in the extreme minority on this one.
