Folk Tales

Written by N. Robin Crossby, Brent Bailey, Kerry Mould (36 pages, COL #4860)

Folklore encompasses the traditional beliefs, customs, and stories of a community or culture, passed through the generations by word of mouth. More than just a collection of whimsical or terrifying tales, folklore is a key element in the structuring of daily life, moral codes, and how people understand the natural world. As most Hârnians are illiterate, oral traditions such as these serve as the primary mechanism for education, social control, and community cohesion.

This article discusses the functions that folk tales serve in Hârnic society, whether as entertainment, a way to interpret the inexplicable, or to serve as warnings or cautionary tales. Various types of folk tales are described, each with common themes and morals. The article also covers storytelling practices and suggests ways to use the HârnMaster Folklore skill.

Folk Tales includes dozens of examples of Hârnic legends, campfire tales, and moral lessons collected from 40 years of Columbia Games HârnWorld publications.
