RPG Print News – Free League, Goodman Games, Columbia Games, and More.

This week sees a new setting along with warlock support for D&D. There are lots of extras for RPGs like bean bags, a shelf file, and dice. Harn has a revised kingdom book, there is a freaky magic book for the OSR, and three new RPGs in two books by Possum Creek Games.

Roll Inish! Initiative Beanbags by Beadle and Grimm’s
  • SYSTEM: Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition/RPGs with initiative
  • PRODUCT TYPE: initiative bean bags
  • DESCRIPTION: Yeah, this appears to be a real thing. Isn’t RPGing a great hobby? A player rolls initiative. The GM figures their place in the order and throws their bean bag initiative at them. No lists required, no forgetting the initiative order. Of course, when combat ends all the players will throw the bags back at the GM. Could be good or bad depending on where you’re sitting. For AD&D 2E or Free League’s Year Zero RPGs like Alien you can likely just throw the bags, no rolling by the players required.

The Book of Gaub by Lost Pages

Includes 49 spells and small fictional tales, 00 terrible catastrophes to invoke when its vile magic goes awry, 20 monsters along with insidious rituals to turn them to your gain, 49 bizarre paraphernalia, and adventure hooks and simple sorcery rules.

Republic of Tharda (2022 Edition) by Columbia Games
  • SYSTEM: HarnWorld
  • PRODUCT TYPE: softcover supplement
  • RETAIL PRICE: $39.99
  • DESCRIPTION: The Thardic Republic is a large, prosperous nation in western Hârn. Unique among the Hârnic realms, it is neither a feudal nor tributary monarchy but a plutocratic state governed by a republican senate. The Republic is dominated by a few dozen clans who have parlayed agricultural and commercial wealth into status and position. Bureaucracies of civil servants manage the daily affairs of government, with rival families vying for influence when new appointments are made. Conflicts of interest are common and the resulting system of government has been described as both incredibly selfish and surprisingly functional. The Republic is bordered by the kingdoms of Kanday and Rethem. Relations with both are presently peaceful but tense. Two tribal nations range along the frontier: the ruthless Tulwyn and the wary, often violent Gozyda.

Venture and Dungeon | The Flower Court by Possum Creek Games
  • SYSTEM: unique
  • PRODUCT TYPE: softcover core rulebook
  • DESCRIPTION: In Venture and Dungeon, Venture explores introspective heroic fantasy while Dungeon is about teens playing games of their own. Venture provides magic-filled forests and looming castles, champions in shining armor and vagabonds with dazzling charm, markets of ill-repute and duplicitous authorities, and uncaring gods high above always asking, “What do you do next?” PCs travel through a fantasy world, making their way across the terrain while learning about themselves and each other. Dungeon provides trap-riddled school hallways, dragons in the boiler room, the endless grid of suburbia, doodles of monsters in the margins of planners, and a grinning game master always asking, “What do you do next?” The PCs are teenagers on the verge of the greatest danger of their lives, whether that danger is the vast dungeon they explore once a week, or the existential terror of high school. The Flower Court introduces the Crystal Age; to the neon spires of the glorious Chrome Dynasty in the Plastic Empire. The nobility of the Crystal Age blurs the lines between pop divas, celebrities, warlords, and despots. If I’m understanding this correctly, the PCs are lifted up to the silicon gardens from the concrete jungle below and play warlord-babes and slaughter-divas of the nobility who focus their minds on the most important task facing the celebrities—marriage and love. The Flower Court is the place where the powerful come together to flirt and debate and, just occasionally, murder each other. So it’s the nouveau riche with a little bit of murder.

Is it free shipping if you choose to replace them? If so that must be a massive hit for FL.

A massive hit indeed. Several thousand new dice have to be sent out, all on FL's dime. Not sure what else they could do however. And to their credit they took full responsibility all the way from the top down.

Quoted from the kickstarter:

Tomas Härenstam here, CEO of Free League. I'd like to take the opportunity to reach out personally over the issue of the misprinted D12 Feat Dice for The One Ring™. It's clear that we failed to meet our normal standards of quality control here, and for that we apologize. We're also grateful for your patience while we investigated the issue and considered how to resolve it. We're not just a company, we're gamers and massive Tolkien fans ourselves, and for a thing like this to happen just feels horrible. This is what's going to happen now:

  • The fulfillment now in progress will continue, even with the misprinted dice – orders are going out as we speak and cannot be stopped without causing significant delays, which I don't think anyone wants.
  • We will reprint the faulty D12 Feat Dice and send them to all backers who want them, at no extra cost. We will offer you a choice of replacement Feat Dice or a 100 SEK personal discount voucher in our webshop. We plan to use the Pledge Manager to manage this – more information on how will follow soon. Please be aware that reprinting the dice will take some time, as we are talking about tens of thousands of dice to be produced and shipped. As soon as we have a clearer timeline, we will update you here, but expect it to take a few months. It is likely that we will be able to ship the replacement dice along with Ruins of the Lost Realm, for those of you who have ordered this book as an add-on. For others, we will send the dice separately. In the meantime, the misprinted dice can be used, counting the 11 as 1, so please don't let the misprint completely stop you from playing the game.
  • Internally, we are taking steps to change and clarify the organization of this project going forward, to make sure nothing like this can ever occur again. We at Free League take the quality of our games very seriously, and we want to emphasize that what happened here is not acceptable.

That's my dog, Walter
Harn is such its own thing and feels like a rabbit hole. Its sort of like Jazz for many people. You may know many people enjoy Jazz and whenever you hear Take Five you are delighted, but you also know there is so much more to the genre that, if you leaned in, it may consume you.

They almost got me on the rules kickstarter. I really thought I wanted all the things.
