I think that, in real life, bards would be the ones that really, seriously, survive most adventures. I mean - they should be - someone has to live to tell the stories.
Seriously, how can you hate the bard. So maybe they can't exactly chop everyone in two or turn people into ash or heal everyone in a snap or backstab you to death....but they can sorta do all of this - AND they can sing. I mean, come on.
Any adventure that isn't combat heavy is an adventure for the bard....unfortunately, most adventures ARE combat heavy. I think it's just a problem with the system, not the class.
O - but I do hate the idea of gnome bards. I mean, gnomes are NOT charismatic. They are annoying and pull tricks on people. That's it.
